Is this the right printer for you?

Who the Ricoh fi-8150 is actually for

Most printer pages just tell you what a printer does. Here's the honest version: when this machine is the right choice, when it's fine, and when you should look at something else. We sell a lot of these for a reason, but the reason is not "every office."

Best fit

Pick this if...

  • You scan 500-3,000 pages a day in a workgroup of 5-25 people and need 50 ppm / 100 ipm without paying for a flatbed.
  • You need to capture the messy stuff — 20 to 465 gsm, plastic ID cards, mailing envelopes, mixed batches — without sorting first.
  • You want gigabit Ethernet so the scanner sits on the network and any PC running PaperStream IPNet can pull from it.
  • You're standardizing on Ricoh fi-8000 and want the entry workgroup model that shares parts and PaperStream profiles with the rest of the fleet.
  • You scan a lot of NCR carbonless paper or oily forms — the urethane rollers don't swell the way EPDM does.
Works fine

You'll be happy if...

  • You scan 200-500 pages a day — the fi-8150 handles it easily, you'll just amortize the hardware over a longer cycle.
  • You occasionally scan passports — works with the optional carrier sheet, but the fi-8170/8190 do it without one.
  • You don't have a managed network capture platform — PaperStream Capture (bundled) handles it, just less elegantly than NX Manager.
Look elsewhere

Skip this if...

  • You need a flatbed for books, fragile originals, or oversized art — get the fi-8250 (same scanner, plus flatbed).
  • You scan more than 8,000 pages a day — step up to the fi-8190 or fi-8290.
  • You need Overscan Control or iSOP acoustic paper protection — those are on the fi-8170 and up, not the 8150.
  • You scan A3 / 11x17 originals — max width is 8.5 inches, no exceptions.
  • You want a touchscreen on the scanner itself — the fi-8150 has a basic LED panel, no LCD; look at the fi-8170 or fi-7300NX.
Full specifications

Every spec, no guessing

The Ricoh fi-8150 is the entry workgroup model in the fi-8000 series — a sheet-fed duplex desktop scanner that runs at 50 ppm / 100 ipm (color, 200/300 dpi) with a 100-sheet ADF and a rated 8,000-sheet daily volume. Built for offices of 5-25 people that scan 500-3,000 pages a day, it's the model most resellers put in for accounts payable, claims intake, HR onboarding, and clinic chart digitization. Clear Image Capture (Ricoh's hybrid optical tech that debuted on this generation) handles 20 to 465 gsm in the same batch, plastic ID cards up to 1.4 mm, and Automatic Separation Control adapts torque on the fly so mixed batches feed without sorting. Connectivity is USB 3.2 Gen 1 plus gigabit Ethernet — the LAN port is the reason most buyers pick the 8150 over a cheaper SP-1130N: any PC on the network running PaperStream IPNet can grab the scanner. Bundled software is PaperStream IP (TWAIN/ISIS), PaperStream Capture, ClickScan, and ABBYY FineReader for ScanSnap. The thing buyers regret: skipping the 8170 to save $300, then realizing they wanted iSOP and Overscan Control after the first jam tears a contract. Letter/legal max — no A3, no flatbed.

Supplies & consumables

Toner, yields, and what to actually reorder

The #1 question we get on this printer is "which toner do I buy?" Short answer: you have two cartridge options and a drum. Standard yield TN830 covers roughly 1,200 pages. High yield TN830XL covers roughly 4,500 pages and is the better value for most offices. Pick XL unless you print very little.

The drum unit (DR810) is separate and usually lasts 15,000 to 30,000 pages before it needs replacing. At a typical small office volume, expect to change it once every 2 to 4 years.

If you lease this printer through us, toner and drum are included. You never pay for supplies separately. That's usually the better deal once you add up real costs over 3 years.

What customers actually say

The 5-star consensus: "it just works"

Small sample size, high signal. The 3 verified reviewers picked this model to replace older inkjets or aging Ricoh machines. Common threads in the feedback:

  • "Been scanning documents for my small accounting practice for about 8 months now. The fi-8150 handles our volume really well, around 150 pages a day, and the duplex scanning saves us so much time on two-sided documents. Haven't had any paper jams or driver issues."
  • "Good scanner for our office, feeds documents smoothly and the image quality is solid. Wish the software was a bit more intuitive for batch processing, but once you figure it out it's fine."
  • "Needed something reliable for digitizing old files and client paperwork. The fi-8150 has been rock solid for the past year, 50 ppm is fast enough for what we do, and the ADF never gets confused with different paper sizes."

FAQ

Ricoh fi-8150, common questions

The questions we get asked most often on this model. If yours isn't here, call (704) 741-0821 and get an answer in about 30 seconds.

The Ricoh fi-8150 is a document scanner and does not use toner, as it is not a printer or copier. Instead, it uses consumable parts like pick rollers and separation rollers designed for high-volume scanning. For maintenance, you would purchase a ScannerAid kit, which includes rollers and cleaning supplies. When you lease through us with maintenance included, you never pay for these consumables separately.
The Ricoh fi-8150 is designed for light workloads with a speed of 50 ppm / 100 ipm and a daily volume of 8,000 sheets, while the Ricoh fi-8170 is built for higher volumes, offering 70 ppm / 140 ipm and a daily volume of 10,000 sheets. The fi-8170 also features a higher optical resolution of 600 dpi (1,200 dpi via driver) and can handle a wider variety of document types, including business cards, plastic cards, and long pages up to 218 inches. Additionally, the fi-8170 includes Manual Feed Mode for thicker documents. For small offices with moderate scanning needs, the fi-8150 is a cost-effective choice, but those requiring higher speed and versatility may prefer the fi-8170.
The Ricoh fi-8150 is well-suited for small businesses with scanning needs of 500-3,000 pages per day, offering a speed of 50 ppm / 100 ipm and a 100-sheet ADF. Its compact design and network connectivity make it ideal for offices of 5-25 people. However, if your business requires higher volume or more advanced features, consider stepping up to a commercial option.
The Ricoh fi-8150 is a document scanner and does not have printing capabilities, whether in color or monochrome. If you need a color printer, consider alternatives like the Ricoh MP C3004, Ricoh MP C4504, or Ricoh MP C6004.
