Is this the right printer for you?

Who the Ricoh fi-7800 is actually for

Most printer pages just tell you what a printer does. Here's the honest version: when this machine is the right choice, when it's fine, and when you should look at something else. We sell a lot of these for a reason, but the reason is not "every office."

Best fit

Pick this if...

  • You already own an fi-7800 fleet and need exact-match replacements before standardizing on the fi-8930.
  • You scan 20,000-100,000 pages a day, A3 capable, in a service bureau, BPO, healthcare records, or government archive.
  • You handle mixed-batch A8-to-A3 scanning with ultrasonic double-feed detection.
  • You're standardized on Kofax, Laserfiche, Square 9, EzeScan or another ISIS/TWAIN capture platform.
  • You need Ethernet so multiple capture stations on the network can share the device.
Works fine

You'll be happy if...

  • You scan 5,000-20,000 pages a day — overbuilt for that, but feed reliability stays high.
  • You want PC-less scanning via the touchscreen — works through PaperStream NX Manager, but most production shops drive it from a capture PC.
  • You need spare parts and consumables for an existing fi-7800 fleet — Ricoh still stocks rollers and pads.
Look elsewhere

Skip this if...

  • You're a new buyer — this model is discontinued. Get the fi-8930 (130 ppm, 750-sheet ADF, same chassis class) or fi-8820 (120 ppm, 500-sheet) instead.
  • You scan under 5,000 pages a day — get an fi-7480 or fi-8270 instead.
  • You need a flatbed — ADF-only; pair with an fi-70F or fi-7700.
  • You don't have a dedicated scan operator — the throughput only earns out with someone feeding it.
  • You expect long-term parts availability — Ricoh has moved the platform to fi-8930; plan a 2-3 year transition.
Full specifications

Every spec, no guessing

The Ricoh fi-7800 is a 110 ppm A3 production document scanner — discontinued and replaced by the fi-8930, but still in active service across BPOs, healthcare records, government archive operations, and large in-house digitization teams. It runs at 110 pages per minute / 220 images per minute in color at 200/300 dpi with a 500-sheet single-pass duplex ADF and a daily duty cycle of 100,000 sheets. Optical resolution is 600 dpi. The 4.3-inch color touchscreen handles operator job buttons, and PaperStream NX Manager enables PC-less workflow if you want it. Mixed-batch handling is the platform that the fi-8930 inherits: A8 receipts to A3 / 11x17 plans in the same hopper, ultrasonic double-feed detection, and Ricoh's iSOP paper protection that listens for crumple sounds and stops the feed before damage. PaperStream IP image processing handles auto-crop, deskew, blank-page deletion, and Card Stitching. Connectivity is USB 3.2 Gen 1x1 plus Gigabit Ethernet. Drivers cover ISIS, TWAIN, and PaperStream IP, so Kofax, Laserfiche, Square 9, and EzeScan all integrate cleanly. The thing to know: this is an end-of-life model. Buy it only if you're matching an existing fi-7800 fleet; for a new install, the fi-8930 has more headroom (130 ppm, 750-sheet ADF) at a similar price.

Supplies & consumables

Toner, yields, and what to actually reorder

The #1 question we get on this printer is "which toner do I buy?" Short answer: you have two cartridge options and a drum. Standard yield TN830 covers roughly 1,200 pages. High yield TN830XL covers roughly 4,500 pages and is the better value for most offices. Pick XL unless you print very little.

The drum unit (DR810) is separate and usually lasts 15,000 to 30,000 pages before it needs replacing. At a typical small office volume, expect to change it once every 2 to 4 years.

If you lease this printer through us, toner and drum are included. You never pay for supplies separately. That's usually the better deal once you add up real costs over 3 years.

What customers actually say

The 5-star consensus: "it just works"

Small sample size, high signal. The 3 verified reviewers picked this model to replace older inkjets or aging Ricoh machines. Common threads in the feedback:

  • "We use this for our small law office to scan documents and the fi-7800 handles our volume without breaking a sweat. The duplex scanning is fast and the image quality is consistently good. Haven't had any issues in the year we've had it."
  • "Good workhorse scanner for batch processing. My only complaint is the learning curve on the software was steeper than I expected, but once I figured it out the fi-7800 does what it's supposed to do reliably."
  • "Invested in this for our document management system and it's been solid. High-speed scanning, good paper handling, and the ADF works as advertised. Haven't needed to call support once."

The Ricoh fi-7800 is a high-volume production document scanner and does not use toner. Instead, it uses consumable parts like brake rollers and pick rollers for scanning. Since it is not a printer or copier, it does not require toner cartridges. For a Ricoh device that uses high-yield toner, consider a Ricoh multifunction printer (MFP) or laser printer.
