Is this the right printer for you?

Who the HP DesignJet T830 24in MFP Printer is actually for

Most printer pages just tell you what a printer does. Here's the honest version: when this machine is the right choice, when it's fine, and when you should look at something else. We sell a lot of these for a reason, but the reason is not "every office."

Best fit

Pick this if...

  • You're an AEC, GIS, or construction shop of 3-20 people that needs print, scan, and copy of A1 drawings on the same machine.
  • You print 50-400 A1 plots a month and scan or copy site drawings, redlines, or vendor markups weekly.
  • You need a job-site-friendly plotter — reinforced legs, compact for an MFP, designed for site offices and contractor trailers.
  • You want HP-GL/2 + HP-RTL CAD compatibility on a 24-inch MFP without stepping up to the T2600 enterprise tier.
  • You want Wi-Fi standard so the field tablets and laptops can print without a network drop.
Works fine

You'll be happy if...

  • You print 400-700 A1 plots a month — the T830 keeps up; standardize on 300-ml HP 728 cartridges for ink economy.
  • You scan a few large-format originals each week — the integrated CIS sheetfed scanner handles it; for daily archive scanning step up to the T2600 or pair with an HP HD Pro 2.
  • You'd like PostScript — not on this SKU; HP-GL/2 + HP-RTL only.
  • You're replacing a HP DesignJet T520 24-in or T1200 MFP — operators adapt quickly to the single-touchscreen scan/copy workflow.
Look elsewhere

Skip this if...

  • You print under 20 A1 plots a month — overkill; the T250 (no scanner) is several thousand cheaper.
  • You need 36-inch (E-size) print and scan — get the T830 36-in MFP (F9A30D/G), not the 24-in.
  • You need PostScript or the Adobe PDF Print Engine — not on this model. Step to the T2600 PS MFP.
  • You scan archive volumes daily — the integrated sheetfed scanner is built for occasional use, not production digitization.
  • You print full-color renders, photos, or fine art — HP Bright Office Inks are line-drawing-tuned. Z-series for photo.
Full specifications

Every spec, no guessing

The HP DesignJet T830 24-in MFP is HP's compact 24-inch print-scan-copy plotter — the most compact large-format MFP on the market when it shipped — aimed at AEC, GIS, and construction shops that need to print A1 drawings, scan site markups, and copy a redline without leaving the workstation. Print speed is 81 A1/hr (26 sec/A1 in Fast mode on bond) at up to 2400 x 1200 optimized dpi, using the 4-color HP 728 ink set (CMY dye + matte K pigment). The integrated CIS sheetfed scanner handles 24-inch-wide originals (610 mm x 2.77 m max) at up to 600 dpi, with destinations to email, network folder, USB flash, the operator's computer, mobile via HP Smart app, or cloud via the same app. Copy speed is up to 7.5 cm/sec color / 11.43 cm/sec grayscale at 200 dpi, with 50-400% reduce/enlarge. Standard config includes a 50-sheet A3/A4 input tray, manual sheet feed for A2/A1, single roll feed, integrated horizontal cutter, media bin, and the reinforced-leg stand designed for jobsite transport. Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n and Wi-Fi Direct are standard. The thing buyers regret: paying for the MFP capability and then never scanning anything — if you're not actively scanning or copying large-format originals at least once a week, the T650 (no scanner) is a few thousand cheaper for the same print engine. No PostScript, no front-panel keyboard, no auto duplex on this SKU.

Supplies & consumables

Toner, yields, and what to actually reorder

The #1 question we get on this printer is "which toner do I buy?" Short answer: you have two cartridge options and a drum. Standard yield TN830 covers roughly 1,200 pages. High yield TN830XL covers roughly 4,500 pages and is the better value for most offices. Pick XL unless you print very little.

The drum unit (DR810) is separate and usually lasts 15,000 to 30,000 pages before it needs replacing. At a typical small office volume, expect to change it once every 2 to 4 years.

If you lease this printer through us, toner and drum are included. You never pay for supplies separately. That's usually the better deal once you add up real costs over 3 years.

The HP DesignJet T830 24in MFP Printer ships with starter ink cartridges, which are included for initial setup. The starter cartridges have a lower yield compared to high-yield options.
