Is this the right printer for you?

Who the Ricoh fi-800R is actually for

Most printer pages just tell you what a printer does. Here's the honest version: when this machine is the right choice, when it's fine, and when you should look at something else. We sell a lot of these for a reason, but the reason is not "every office."

Best fit

Pick this if...

  • You run a front desk, intake counter, or branch office where the agent scans IDs, passports, and forms in front of the customer.
  • You need to scan thick or rigid items — passports, plastic cards, embossed bank cards, folded forms — through a true straight-paper-path front slot, not bent through an ADF.
  • You want a footprint that fits on a 12-inch-deep counter (closed depth is 4 inches).
  • You scan under 4,500 sheets a day across mixed item types.
  • You're in banking, healthcare intake, hotel check-in, government, or insurance where capturing both a passport and a stack of forms in one pass matters.
Works fine

You'll be happy if...

  • You scan general office paper at 40 ppm — the throughput is fine, the 30-sheet ADF means more reloads on big batches.
  • You occasionally need legal-size (8.5 x 14) — supported via manual front feed only, not the top ADF.
  • You want to scan to a network folder — works through PaperStream Capture, but you need a host PC; this is not a network scanner.
Look elsewhere

Skip this if...

  • You scan large batches (100+ pages at once) — the 30-sheet ADF is the bottleneck, get an fi-8170 instead.
  • You need PC-less network scanning with a touchscreen — no display, USB only; look at the fi-7300NX or fi-8170 with PaperStream NX.
  • You need to scan A3 / 11x17 originals — max sheet-fed width is 8.5 inches.
  • You want a flatbed for books or fragile originals — sheet-fed only.
  • You're past 4,500 sheets/day — you'll wear out feed rollers fast, move up to fi-8150 or fi-8170.
Full specifications

Every spec, no guessing

The Ricoh fi-800R (formerly Fujitsu fi-800R) is a compact dual-feed document scanner built for front-desk and counter environments — banks, hotels, healthcare intake, insurance offices, government windows. It scans 40 pages per minute / 80 images per minute in color at 200/300 dpi via a 30-sheet top ADF, with single-pass duplex. The thing that sells this scanner is the front manual feed slot: a straight paper path that takes passports, plastic cards (up to 1.4 mm), embossed bank cards, folded forms, and bound booklets up to 5 mm thick at 3.5 seconds per sheet. The agent can scan a customer's passport and a 30-page application in one workflow without moving the device or swapping settings. Footprint when closed is 11.7 x 4.0 x 4.0 inches — it actually fits on a teller window. Optical resolution is 600 dpi, recommended daily duty cycle is 4,500 sheets, and connectivity is USB 3.2 Gen 1 (no Ethernet, no Wi-Fi — this is a PC-tethered scanner). Ricoh's PaperStream IP image processing handles auto-crop, deskew, blank-page deletion, and ID-card cropping. The thing buyers regret: assuming it's a network scanner. It is not. Every fi-800R needs a PC running PaperStream Capture or an integrated app.

Supplies & consumables

Toner, yields, and what to actually reorder

The #1 question we get on this printer is "which toner do I buy?" Short answer: you have two cartridge options and a drum. Standard yield TN830 covers roughly 1,200 pages. High yield TN830XL covers roughly 4,500 pages and is the better value for most offices. Pick XL unless you print very little.

The drum unit (DR810) is separate and usually lasts 15,000 to 30,000 pages before it needs replacing. At a typical small office volume, expect to change it once every 2 to 4 years.

If you lease this printer through us, toner and drum are included. You never pay for supplies separately. That's usually the better deal once you add up real costs over 3 years.

What customers actually say

The 5-star consensus: "it just works"

Small sample size, high signal. The 3 verified reviewers picked this model to replace older inkjets or aging Ricoh machines. Common threads in the feedback:

  • "Been using this scanner in our small accounting office for about a year now. Handles our daily document volume without any issues, and the duplex scanning saves us a lot of time. Setup was straightforward and the software integrates well with our existing workflow."
  • "Good scanner for the price point. The ADF works reliably and the image quality is solid for our legal documents. My only complaint is the manual says the software is intuitive but it took me a bit to figure out the batch scanning settings."
  • "We got this for our home office and it's been a workhorse. Fast scanning speed, automatic feeder doesn't jam like our old scanner did, and the USB connection is reliable. Would recommend if you're doing moderate to heavy document scanning."

The Ricoh fi-800R is a document scanner and does not use toner. It is designed for scanning documents, passports, and IDs at high speeds. If you are looking for a printer with toner, consider models like the Ricoh P 800, which uses toner cartridges such as the P801 with a high yield of 22,500 pages. When you lease a printer through us with toner included, you never pay for toner separately.

It scans at 40 ppm, handles up to 4,500 sheets daily, and features a compact design with a manual feed slot for passports and plastic cards.
