Is this the right printer for you?

Who the Oce Plotwave 5000 is actually for

Most printer pages just tell you what a printer does. Here's the honest version: when this machine is the right choice, when it's fine, and when you should look at something else. We sell a lot of these for a reason, but the reason is not "every office."

Best fit

Pick this if...

  • Pick this if you print 1,500-5,000 D-size drawings monthly and your current plotter can't keep up.
  • Pick this if encrypted disk and role-based authentication are required by your IT or compliance team.
  • Pick this if you need 4-roll auto-switching so the operator isn't swapping media all day.
  • Pick this if your reprographics floor needs the optional Scanner Express for full digitization workflow.
  • Pick this if instant-on from sleep matters because the machine prints intermittently throughout the day.
Works fine

You'll be happy if...

  • It's fine if your volume is 1,000-1,500 D-size monthly and you want serious headroom.
  • It's fine if you start with 2 rolls and add the other 2 later as volume grows.
  • It's fine if you postpone the scanner add-on and use existing scanning equipment.
  • It's fine if your team is used to the ClearConnect UI from older PlotWaves; the workflow carries over.
Look elsewhere

Skip this if...

  • Skip this if you need color printing; monochrome only.
  • Skip this if your monthly volume is under 800 D-size; this machine is overkill.
  • Skip this if you print 6,000+ D-size monthly; look at the PlotWave 5500 or 7500.
  • Skip this if you need duplex large-format; single-sided only.
  • Skip this if your floor can't handle a 60-inch-wide footprint with media clearance.
Full specifications

Every spec, no guessing

The Oce PlotWave 5000 is a production-class monochrome wide-format MFP for AEC firms, government agencies, and reprographics shops that have moved past mid-volume and need real throughput. It hits 8 A1 prints per minute (4 E/A0 per minute) at 600x1200 dpi via LED electrophotography. Radiant Fusing means it wakes from sleep and prints in under 40 seconds, no real warm-up wait. Up to 4 rolls online with 7,800 square feet of total media (650 ft per roll). The 10.4-inch ClearConnect multi-touch interface runs the same UI as the rest of the PlotWave line, which is good for operators familiar with it. Optional Scanner Express with ImageLogic adds wide-format scanning to PDF, TIFF, JPEG, and a few other targets. Built-in security is real, not marketing: encrypted disk, RAM shredding on shutdown, role-based authentication. Sweet spot is 1,500 to 5,000 D-size prints monthly. The one thing buyers regret is buying the print-only configuration when they later need scanning; the optional scanner is a meaningful add-on cost, so spec it up front. Solid for high-volume technical print floors that need security plus throughput in one box.

Supplies & consumables

Toner, yields, and what to actually reorder

The #1 question we get on this printer is "which toner do I buy?" Short answer: you have two cartridge options and a drum. Standard yield TN830 covers roughly 1,200 pages. High yield TN830XL covers roughly 4,500 pages and is the better value for most offices. Pick XL unless you print very little.

The drum unit (DR810) is separate and usually lasts 15,000 to 30,000 pages before it needs replacing. At a typical small office volume, expect to change it once every 2 to 4 years.

If you lease this printer through us, toner and drum are included. You never pay for supplies separately. That's usually the better deal once you add up real costs over 3 years.
