Is this the right printer for you?

Who the HP DesignJet T830 36in MFP Printer is actually for

Most printer pages just tell you what a printer does. Here's the honest version: when this machine is the right choice, when it's fine, and when you should look at something else. We sell a lot of these for a reason, but the reason is not "every office."

Best fit

Pick this if...

  • You're an AEC, GIS, or construction shop of 5-30 people that needs print, scan, and copy of E-size / A0 drawings on a single machine.
  • You print 50-400 A0/A1 plots a month and scan site markups, vendor redlines, or as-builts weekly.
  • You need a 36-inch MFP that fits a job-site office or contractor trailer — reinforced-leg stand, designed for transport.
  • You want Wi-Fi-first deployment — works without a LAN drop, prints from tablets and phones via HP Smart app and ePrint.
  • You want HP-GL/2 + HP-RTL CAD compatibility without stepping to the enterprise T2600 PS MFP.
Works fine

You'll be happy if...

  • You print 400-700 A0/A1 plots a month — the T830 keeps up; standardize on 300-ml HP 728 cartridges.
  • You scan a few E-size originals each week — the integrated CIS sheetfed scanner handles weekly markups; for daily archive digitization pair with an HP HD Pro 2 42-in scanner.
  • You'd like PostScript — not on this SKU. Step up to the T2600 PS MFP.
  • You're replacing a HP DesignJet T1200/T1300 MFP — operators adapt quickly to the touchscreen scan workflow.
Look elsewhere

Skip this if...

  • You print under 20 A0/A1 plots a month — overkill; the T630 36-in (no scanner) is several thousand cheaper.
  • You only need 24-inch (A1) print and scan — get the T830 24-in MFP (F9A28D), not the 36-in.
  • You need PostScript or the Adobe PDF Print Engine — not on this model. Step up to the T2600 PS MFP.
  • You scan archive volumes daily — the integrated sheetfed scanner is for occasional use, not production digitization.
  • You print full-color renders, photos, or fine art — HP 728 ink set is line-drawing-tuned. Z-series for photo.
Full specifications

Every spec, no guessing

The HP DesignJet T830 36-in MFP is the print-scan-copy version of the T730 36-in — same engine, same Wi-Fi-first design, with HP's integrated 36-inch CIS sheetfed scanner bolted on top. Aimed at AEC, GIS, and construction shops that need to print A0/E-size drawings, scan site markups, and copy E-size originals on the same machine, ideally from a job-site office or contractor trailer. Print speed peaks at 82 A1/hr (25 sec/A1 in Fast mode on bond) at up to 2400 x 1200 optimized dpi using the 4-color HP 728 ink set (CMY dye + matte K pigment). The integrated CIS scanner handles 36-inch-wide originals at up to 600 dpi with destinations to email, network folder, USB flash, the operator's computer, mobile via HP Smart app, or cloud through the same app. Copy speed is up to 7.5 cm/sec color / 11.43 cm/sec grayscale at 200 dpi with 50-400% reduce/enlarge. Standard config includes a 50-sheet A3/A4 input tray, single roll (11 to 36 inches) with automatic horizontal cutter, manual sheet feed up to A0, integrated media bin, and the reinforced-leg stand built for transport. Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n and Wi-Fi Direct are standard. Footprint is 60.9 x 27.2 inches with the stand. The thing buyers regret: assuming the integrated scanner could handle daily archive digitization — it can't, it's built for occasional walkup scan-to-email. If you scan that volume, pair the T730 36-in with a dedicated HP HD Pro 2 scanner instead.

Supplies & consumables

Toner, yields, and what to actually reorder

The #1 question we get on this printer is "which toner do I buy?" Short answer: you have two cartridge options and a drum. Standard yield TN830 covers roughly 1,200 pages. High yield TN830XL covers roughly 4,500 pages and is the better value for most offices. Pick XL unless you print very little.

The drum unit (DR810) is separate and usually lasts 15,000 to 30,000 pages before it needs replacing. At a typical small office volume, expect to change it once every 2 to 4 years.

If you lease this printer through us, toner and drum are included. You never pay for supplies separately. That's usually the better deal once you add up real costs over 3 years.

What customers actually say

The 5-star consensus: "it just works"

Small sample size, high signal. The 3 verified reviewers picked this model to replace older inkjets or aging HP machines. Common threads in the feedback:

  • "Been using this for our architecture firm for about 8 months now. The 36-inch width is perfect for our drawings, and the scan-to-file feature has saved us so much time on document management. Print quality is sharp even on technical specs."
  • "Good machine overall for our small print shop, handles the volume we need. Only knocked off a star because the learning curve on the interface was steeper than expected, but support got us sorted out pretty quick."
  • "Grabbed one for my home office to handle large format posters and prints. Multifunction is clutch since I also need to scan old blueprints for clients. Reliable workhorse, no regrets."

The HP DesignJet T830 36in MFP Printer ships with starter ink cartridges, not toner, as it uses inkjet technology. When you lease through us with ink included, you never pay for ink separately.
