Is this the right printer for you?

Who the HP DesignJet T230 24-in Printer is actually for

Most printer pages just tell you what a printer does. Here's the honest version: when this machine is the right choice, when it's fine, and when you should look at something else. We sell a lot of these for a reason, but the reason is not "every office."

Best fit

Pick this if...

  • You're a one-person architect, engineer, or surveyor who needs occasional A1/D plots and wants the cheapest desktop way to do it.
  • You print 10-100 A1 plots a month — light enough that the 35 sec/A1 speed and 29-ml cartridges are fine.
  • You want a 24-inch plotter that fits on a desk or shelf (39.9 x 17.3 x 11.2 in, 47.4 lb).
  • You print mostly mono CAD line drawings with occasional color and want HP Bright Office Inks for crisp lines on plain bond.
  • You want Wi-Fi out of the box so you can drop it anywhere with a power outlet and a wireless signal.
Works fine

You'll be happy if...

  • You print 100-200 A1 plots a month — it'll keep up, but the T250 prints the same job in 30 seconds vs 35 seconds and is the better pick at this volume.
  • You want a stand — sold separately (3C753A T200/T600 stand).
  • You'd like to print A3 sheets without manually loading — add the 8AJ60A automatic sheet feeder.
  • You're replacing a HP DesignJet T120 — same form factor, same desktop fit, modest speed bump.
Look elsewhere

Skip this if...

  • You print more than 200 A1 plots a month — 35 sec/A1 will start to bottleneck and the 29-ml cartridge economy gets painful. Step up to the T250 or T650.
  • You need 36-inch (E-size) output — this is 24-inch only.
  • You need scan or copy — print-only; the T830 24-in MFP is the small-shop alternative.
  • You need PostScript — HP-GL/2 raster only on this SKU. Step to the T650 (HP-GL/2 + JPEG/CALS) or higher for PS workflows.
  • You want a front touchscreen — no panel here, all control is via driver, HP Smart app, or Click.
Full specifications

Every spec, no guessing

The HP DesignJet T230 24-in is the entry-level model in HP's small-format DesignJet line — a 24-inch desktop CAD plotter aimed at solo architects, surveyors, students, and small consultancies that print A1/D occasionally and don't want to spend on a full T250 or T650. Print speed is 68 A1/hr (35 sec per A1 in Fast mode on bond) at up to 2400 x 1200 optimized dpi, and the 4-color HP Bright Office Ink set (CMY dye + pigment K) covers everyday line drawings and bright office color. The chassis is identical to the T250: 39.9 x 17.3 x 11.2 inches and 47.4 lb — it lives on a desk or shelf, no stand required. Roll feed runs 11 to 24 inches with an automatic horizontal cutter; sheet feed handles A4 through A1 manually, and the optional automatic sheet feeder accessory adds A3/A4 input. Wi-Fi 802.11a/b/g/n and Wi-Fi Direct are standard. The thing buyers regret: skipping the 80-ml HP 712 black cartridge — the 29-ml supplied cartridges drain fast on full A1 plots. No scanner, no front touchscreen, no PostScript on this model. If you want any of those, the T250 (5 sec faster per A1) or T650 (26 sec/A1 + HP-GL/2 + media bin) are the next steps up.

Supplies & consumables

Toner, yields, and what to actually reorder

The #1 question we get on this printer is "which toner do I buy?" Short answer: you have two cartridge options and a drum. Standard yield TN830 covers roughly 1,200 pages. High yield TN830XL covers roughly 4,500 pages and is the better value for most offices. Pick XL unless you print very little.

The drum unit (DR810) is separate and usually lasts 15,000 to 30,000 pages before it needs replacing. At a typical small office volume, expect to change it once every 2 to 4 years.

If you lease this printer through us, toner and drum are included. You never pay for supplies separately. That's usually the better deal once you add up real costs over 3 years.

What customers actually say

The 5-star consensus: "it just works"

Small sample size, high signal. The 3 verified reviewers picked this model to replace older inkjets or aging HP machines. Common threads in the feedback:

  • "Using this for architectural drawings at my small firm. The 24-inch width is perfect for our needs and the print quality on technical documents is sharp. Software integration with our CAD programs works smoothly without much fussing around."
  • "Good printer for graphics work but the ink costs add up faster than I expected. Setup was straightforward and it handles different media types well. Just wish the automatic paper feed was a bit more reliable."
  • "Needed something compact for a home office that could handle large format prints. This T230 delivers on that without taking up the whole room. Been running it for two years now with minimal issues."
