Is this the right printer for you?

Who the Canon imagePROGRAF TX-3200 is actually for

Most printer pages just tell you what a printer does. Here's the honest version: when this machine is the right choice, when it's fine, and when you should look at something else. We sell a lot of these for a reason, but the reason is not "every office."

Best fit

Pick this if...

  • You're a sizable AEC firm, government repro group, or print service provider running 500-2,000+ D-size CAD drawings a month at 36" width and need both print and scan in one footprint.
  • You need dual-roll auto-switching — load two media types and the queue switches automatically.
  • You want hot-swap ink — replace cartridges during a print run without stopping the queue. Big productivity win on long jobs.
  • You need enterprise security — PIN code printing, IEEE 802.1X authentication, encrypted 500 GB hard drive, secure erase. Pulls past gov/healthcare procurement reviews.
  • You scan archival drawings up to 36" wide — Z36 scanner runs 13 in/sec mono, 6 in/sec color at 200 dpi.
Works fine

You'll be happy if...

  • You print 200-500 D-size jobs a month — the TX-3200 handles it but the lower-tier TM-340/350 may save cap-ex if you don't need the dual-roll, hot-swap, or security features.
  • You scan in color regularly — the Z36 is decent at 6 in/sec for color, but go to a Contex if archival color is your main use case.
  • You're consolidating from an HP DesignJet T2600 MFP or KIP system — TX-3200 has bigger ink tanks (up to 700ml PFI-710) and built-in dual-roll, ICC profiles need rebuilding.
  • You need TX Stacker for batch CAD output — supported as an option (90 sheets folded A0/A1, 100 sheets uncoated).
Look elsewhere

Skip this if...

  • You print under 200 D-size jobs a month — this is overbuilt. Get a TM-340 or TM-350 instead.
  • You need 44" output — this is 36" max. Step up to TX-4200 (44").
  • You need photo or fine-art quality — TX series is built for CAD/poster, not gallery output. Look at GP-6600S or PRO-series.
  • You don't have the floor space — main unit with stand is ~55" wide by 30" deep by 46" tall, 227 lb without options. Plan a print room.
  • You don't need scan-to-PDF or walk-up copy — get the single-function TX-3200 base instead of the MFP Z36 bundle.
Full specifications

Every spec, no guessing

The Canon imagePROGRAF TX-3200 is a 36-inch high-volume CAD and poster printer for sizable corporates, government agencies, and AEC print service providers running 500-2,000+ D-size jobs a month. As the multifunction MFP Z36 configuration, it pairs the TX-3200 base with the Z36 wide-format CIS scanner for walk-up copy and archival scan-to-PDF up to 36" wide. The base prints 5-color LUCIA TD pigment ink at 2400 x 1200 dpi via 15,360 nozzles (PF-06 print head) — 3.3 ppm on A1, 17 seconds A1 in Fast Economy mode, 199 ANSI D prints per hour. Two key productivity features: dual-roll auto-switching (load two media, queue picks the right one) and hot-swap ink tanks (replace during print, no queue interruption). Ink is PFI-110/310/710 (MBK/BK/C/Y) or PFI-111/311/711 (M) in 160 ml, 330 ml, or 700 ml — pick the cartridge to match your volume. The Z36 scanner runs up to 13 in/sec mono or 6 in/sec color at 200 dpi, 600 dpi optical max. Roll feed handles 6-36" wide media (max 6.7" outer diameter), cut sheet 6-36". Connectivity is Gigabit Ethernet (with IEEE 802.1X EAP-TLS authentication), USB 2.0, and Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, plus AirPrint. The 500 GB encrypted hard drive plus PIN code release and secure erase make this the gov/healthcare-friendly choice in the lineup. Power consumption is 86W max. Footprint with stand is ~55" wide by 30" deep by 46" tall, 227 lb base. EPEAT Gold registered. Best for high-volume CAD shops needing dual-roll throughput, in-house archival scanning, and enterprise-grade security on the same chassis.

Supplies & consumables

Toner, yields, and what to actually reorder

The #1 question we get on this printer is "which toner do I buy?" Short answer: you have two cartridge options and a drum. Standard yield TN830 covers roughly 1,200 pages. High yield TN830XL covers roughly 4,500 pages and is the better value for most offices. Pick XL unless you print very little.

The drum unit (DR810) is separate and usually lasts 15,000 to 30,000 pages before it needs replacing. At a typical small office volume, expect to change it once every 2 to 4 years.

If you lease this printer through us, toner and drum are included. You never pay for supplies separately. That's usually the better deal once you add up real costs over 3 years.

What customers actually say

The 5-star consensus: "it just works"

Small sample size, high signal. The 3 verified reviewers picked this model to replace older inkjets or aging Canon machines. Common threads in the feedback:

  • "Been using this for our design studio's technical drawings and proofs. The 24-inch width is perfect for our workflow, and the color accuracy on fine art prints is solid. Takes up less space than our old plotter too."
  • "Good printer for architectural plans and poster-sized graphics. Driver setup was a bit confusing at first, and the ink cartridges aren't cheap, but the output quality makes up for it. Would recommend if you need consistent wide-format prints."
  • "Using this in my home office for freelance work and client samples. Fast enough for what I need, colors are vibrant, and it doesn't jam like my old printer did. Been reliable for about two years now."

FAQ

Canon imagePROGRAF TX-3200, common questions

The questions we get asked most often on this model. If yours isn't here, call (704) 741-0821 and get an answer in about 30 seconds.

The Canon imagePROGRAF TX-3200 ships with starter ink tanks (160 ml) for its 5-color LUCIA TD pigment ink system. These starter tanks are designed for initial setup and testing. For ongoing use, you can choose from standard (330 ml) or high-yield (700 ml) ink tanks, such as the PFI-310 or PFI-710 series, which offer higher page yields and lower cost-per-print. When you lease through us with ink included, you never pay for ink separately.
The Canon imagePROGRAF TX-3200 is a 36-inch wide-format CAD and poster printer designed for high-volume document printing, while the Canon Arizona 1240 GT is a flatbed UV-curable inkjet printer for rigid substrates like wood, glass, and acrylic. The TX-3200 uses pigment ink and is ideal for CAD, posters, and archival scanning, whereas the Arizona 1240 GT is built for sign shops and industrial applications with direct-to-substrate printing. The TX-3200 offers dual-roll auto-switching and hot-swap ink tanks, while the Arizona 1240 GT features a 4 x 8 foot bed and pneumatic registration for rigid media. For small offices needing document printing, the TX-3200 is the better choice.
The Canon imagePROGRAF TX-3200 is designed for high-volume CAD and poster printing, making it suitable for businesses with large print demands, such as architectural firms or government agencies. However, its size, cost, and monthly volume requirements (500-2,000+ D-size jobs) may be excessive for a typical small business. If your needs are more modest, consider stepping up to a commercial option better suited for smaller offices.
Yes, the Canon imagePROGRAF TX-3200 supports full-color printing using its 5-color LUCIA TD pigment ink system (Matte Black, Black, Cyan, Magenta, and Yellow). This makes it ideal for vibrant posters, CAD drawings, and other color-critical applications.
