Is this the right printer for you?

Who the Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-4600 is actually for

Most printer pages just tell you what a printer does. Here's the honest version: when this machine is the right choice, when it's fine, and when you should look at something else. We sell a lot of these for a reason, but the reason is not "every office."

Best fit

Pick this if...

  • You're a fine art photographer, gallery, or print studio that needs 44" wide prints for exhibition, large-format limited editions, or wall murals.
  • You print 200-1,000 sq ft a month and want a 12-color pigment system (LUCIA PRO II) that delivers a wider gamut and deeper blacks than 6-color or 8-color photo printers.
  • You move between matte fine art papers and glossy/luster — both blacks have dedicated nozzles, no purge cycle on switch.
  • You're scaling up from a PRO-2600 — same ink platform (PFI-3xxx and PFI-2xxx MBK), same drivers, same Print Studio Pro/Professional Print & Layout workflow.
  • You sell archival photographic prints and your reputation depends on color accuracy and longevity on baryta, cotton rag, and luster.
Works fine

You'll be happy if...

  • You print 50-200 sq ft a month — the printer handles low volume but you're paying for 44" capability you'll rarely max out. Consider PRO-2600 (24") for a smaller footprint.
  • You want wireless — Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n is standard; most pros wire it for stability.
  • You also produce occasional CAD plots — it works, but the LUCIA PRO II color set is overbuilt for line drawings. Use the GP-6600S or TZ-30000 for CAD-heavy workflow.
  • You're consolidating from an Epson SureColor P9000 — operators retrain on Canon's UI in days, but plan to redo your custom paper presets and ICC profiles from scratch.
Look elsewhere

Skip this if...

  • You only need 24" or smaller — PRO-2600 (24") or PRO-1000 (17") is half the cost and footprint with the same ink quality.
  • You need 60" wide — step up to PRO-6600 instead.
  • You print high-volume CAD or production posters — this is a fine-art photo printer, not a production unit. TZ-30000 or GP-6600S is the right tool.
  • You print less than 30 sq ft a month — the head-cleaning routines burn ink on power-up. At very low volume you'll spend more on maintenance ink than prints.
  • You don't have a color-managed workflow with calibrated monitor — you'll never see the gamut you're paying for.
  • You don't have the floor space — 62.7" wide by 38.7" deep by 46" tall, 273 lb. Plan for the move-in plus clearance behind for paper exit.
Full specifications

Every spec, no guessing

The Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-4600 is a 44-inch large-format fine-art photo printer for galleries, photographers, and print studios producing exhibition-grade work in widths beyond what a 24" PRO-2600 can deliver. It uses the LUCIA PRO II 12-color pigment ink system (matte black, photo black, cyan, magenta, yellow, photo cyan, photo magenta, gray, photo gray, red, blue, plus chroma optimizer) at 2400 x 1200 dpi via the PF-10 print head — 18,432 nozzles total. Both blacks have dedicated nozzles, so switching from a luster glossy print to a matte cotton rag doesn't burn an ink-purge cycle. Roll feed handles 6-44" wide media (max 6.7" outer diameter), plus a manual front-loading sheet path for stiff fine art papers up to 0.8 mm thick. Connectivity is USB 2.0, Gigabit Ethernet, and Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n standard. Footprint with stand and basket open is 62.7" wide by 38.7" deep by 46" tall, 273 lb. Power consumption is 85 W max. The same drivers and Professional Print & Layout software work across the PRO-2600/4600/6600 platform, so a studio with multiple sizes runs one workflow. Best for studios printing 200-1,000 sq ft a month. The thing to plan for: paper. A roll of premium baryta or cotton rag at 44" is heavy and expensive — measure your storage rack and budget for the inventory before committing.

Supplies & consumables

Toner, yields, and what to actually reorder

The #1 question we get on this printer is "which toner do I buy?" Short answer: you have two cartridge options and a drum. Standard yield TN830 covers roughly 1,200 pages. High yield TN830XL covers roughly 4,500 pages and is the better value for most offices. Pick XL unless you print very little.

The drum unit (DR810) is separate and usually lasts 15,000 to 30,000 pages before it needs replacing. At a typical small office volume, expect to change it once every 2 to 4 years.

If you lease this printer through us, toner and drum are included. You never pay for supplies separately. That's usually the better deal once you add up real costs over 3 years.

What customers actually say

The 5-star consensus: "it just works"

Small sample size, high signal. The 3 verified reviewers picked this model to replace older inkjets or aging Canon machines. Common threads in the feedback:

  • "Been using this for large format printing at my architecture firm for about a year now. The color accuracy is solid and it handles 17-inch rolls without any fussing. Maintenance is straightforward compared to our old Epson."
  • "Good workhorse for my photography business. Print quality on glossy paper is really nice, though the learning curve on the driver software was a bit steep. Haven't had major reliability issues in the 8 months I've had it."
  • "Upgraded from a smaller format printer and the PRO-4600 handles everything I throw at it. Fast output, and the 12-color setup produces really accurate proofs for our design clients."
