  • You print 50-200 sq ft a month — the printer handles low volume but you're paying for 44" capability you'll rarely max out. Consider PRO-2600 (24") for a smaller footprint.
  • You want wireless — Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n is standard; most pros wire it for stability.
  • You also produce occasional CAD plots — it works, but the LUCIA PRO II color set is overbuilt for line drawings. Use the GP-6600S or TZ-30000 for CAD-heavy workflow.
  • You're consolidating from an Epson SureColor P9000 — operators retrain on Canon's UI in days, but plan to redo your custom paper presets and ICC profiles from scratch.

The Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-4600 is a 44-inch large-format fine-art photo printer for galleries, photographers, and print studios producing exhibition-grade work in widths beyond what a 24" PRO-2600 can deliver. It uses the LUCIA PRO II 12-color pigment ink system (matte black, photo black, cyan, magenta, yellow, photo cyan, photo magenta, gray, photo gray, red, blue, plus chroma optimizer) at 2400 x 1200 dpi via the PF-10 print head — 18,432 nozzles total. Both blacks have dedicated nozzles, so switching from a luster glossy print to a matte cotton rag doesn't burn an ink-purge cycle. Roll feed handles 6-44" wide media (max 6.7" outer diameter), plus a manual front-loading sheet path for stiff fine art papers up to 0.8 mm thick. Connectivity is USB 2.0, Gigabit Ethernet, and Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n standard. Footprint with stand and basket open is 62.7" wide by 38.7" deep by 46" tall, 273 lb. Power consumption is 85 W max. The #1 question we get on this printer is "which toner do I buy?" Short answer: you have two cartridge options and a drum. Standard yield TN830 covers roughly 1,200 pages. High yield TN830XL covers roughly 4,500 pages and is the better value for most offices. Pick XL unless you print very little.

The drum unit (DR810) is separate and usually lasts 15,000 to 30,000 pages before it needs replacing. At a typical small office volume, expect to change it once every 2 to 4 years.
