Is this the right printer for you?

Who the Ricoh fi-8170 is actually for

Most printer pages just tell you what a printer does. Here's the honest version: when this machine is the right choice, when it's fine, and when you should look at something else. We sell a lot of these for a reason, but the reason is not "every office."

Best fit

Pick this if...

  • You're a department, records team, or service bureau scanning 1,000-7,000 pages a day to digitize incoming mail, contracts, intake forms, or claims.
  • You need 70 ppm / 140 ipm scanning at 200/300 dpi color — that's 100-page batches loaded and gone in about 90 seconds.
  • You scan mixed batches: receipts, business cards, plastic ID cards (flat or embossed), legal-size contracts, all in the same run.
  • You want both USB and Ethernet — same model serves a single power user OR a network-scan workgroup.
  • You already use PaperStream IP / Capture (TWAIN/ISIS) or Kofax / Laserfiche / OpenText capture front-ends.
Works fine

You'll be happy if...

  • You scan 7,000-10,000 pages a day — within the rated daily volume, just plan consumable rotation (pick/separator/brake rollers).
  • You scan booklets or bi-folded A3 — Manual Feed Mode handles documents and booklets up to 7 mm thick, slower than ADF batches but it works.
  • You scan long documents — supports up to 218 in (5,461 mm) at 200 dpi.
Look elsewhere

Skip this if...

  • You scan less than 200 pages a day — overbuilt. The fi-8040 (40 ppm, 50-sheet ADF) is right-sized.
  • You scan over 10,000 pages a day consistently — move up to the fi-8170's bigger siblings (fi-8270/fi-8290) or the fi-8950 production class.
  • You need a flatbed for bound originals or fragile photos — this is sheet-fed ADF only, no flatbed; pair with the fi-718PR or use a carrier sheet for photos.
  • You need standalone PC-less scanning to email/folder/cloud directly from a touchscreen — fi-8170 has a basic LCD, not the touchscreen DirectScan UI of the fi-8040.
  • You need Wi-Fi — this is a wired-only device (USB or Ethernet).
Full specifications

Every spec, no guessing

The Ricoh fi-8170 is a high-volume desktop document scanner for departments, records teams, and service bureaus digitizing 1,000-7,000 pages a day. It runs at 70 ppm / 140 ipm (color or mono, 200/300 dpi) with a 100-sheet ADF and a 10,000-sheet rated daily volume. Optical resolution is 600 dpi (1,200 dpi via driver). Duplex is single-pass via dual CIS sensors. Document handling is the reason most people pick this over a Brother or Epson at the same price point: it accepts business cards, plastic cards (flat AND embossed), envelopes, sticky-note-tagged sheets, taped receipts, and long pages up to 218 in. Manual Feed Mode handles booklets and bi-folded A3 up to 7 mm thick. Connectivity covers both worlds: USB 3.2 Gen 1 and Gigabit Ethernet are standard, so the same scanner serves a single power user or a network-scan workgroup with PaperStream NX Manager handling cloud/folder/email destinations. Drivers are PaperStream IP (TWAIN, TWAIN x64, ISIS), so it drops into Kofax, Laserfiche, OpenText, DocuWare, or any major capture/ECM front-end. The footprint is compact (11.8 x 6.7 x 6.4 in, 8.8 lb). Buyers regret: no touchscreen for PC-less DirectScan — if you want walk-up scan-to-email without a workstation, get the fi-8040 instead.

Supplies & consumables

Toner, yields, and what to actually reorder

The #1 question we get on this printer is "which toner do I buy?" Short answer: you have two cartridge options and a drum. Standard yield TN830 covers roughly 1,200 pages. High yield TN830XL covers roughly 4,500 pages and is the better value for most offices. Pick XL unless you print very little.

The drum unit (DR810) is separate and usually lasts 15,000 to 30,000 pages before it needs replacing. At a typical small office volume, expect to change it once every 2 to 4 years.

If you lease this printer through us, toner and drum are included. You never pay for supplies separately. That's usually the better deal once you add up real costs over 3 years.

What customers actually say

The 5-star consensus: "it just works"

Small sample size, high signal. The 3 verified reviewers picked this model to replace older inkjets or aging Ricoh machines. Common threads in the feedback:

  • "We got this for our small accounting office and it handles our document scanning workflow really well. The ADF is fast and reliable, and the duplex scanning saves us time. Haven't had any jams or connectivity issues in the first few months."
  • "Good scanner for the price point. Image quality is solid and it processes batches quickly. My only complaint is the software interface feels a bit dated, but once you get it set up it works without much fussing."
  • "Using this in our medical records department to digitize patient files. The 70 ppm speed and card scanning mode have been invaluable for us. Very durable machine so far."

FAQ

Ricoh fi-8170, common questions

The questions we get asked most often on this model. If yours isn't here, call (704) 741-0821 and get an answer in about 30 seconds.

The Ricoh fi-8170 is a document scanner, not a printer, so it does not use toner or any printing supplies. It is designed for digitizing documents and does not require toner cartridges. The only consumables are maintenance parts like roller sets, rated for 200,000 sheets. When you lease through us with maintenance included, you never pay for consumables separately.
The Ricoh fi-8170 is a high-volume scanner with a 100-sheet ADF, 70 ppm speed, and a 10,000-sheet daily duty cycle, ideal for departments scanning 1,000-7,000 pages daily. The fi-8040 is a compact scanner with a 50-sheet ADF, 40 ppm speed, and a 6,000-sheet daily duty cycle, suited for small offices scanning 200-2,000 pages daily. The fi-8040 includes a 4.3-inch touchscreen for PC-less DirectScan and built-in Wi-Fi, while the fi-8170 lacks a touchscreen but offers higher speed and capacity. For small offices needing walk-up scanning, the fi-8040 is a better fit, while the fi-8170 is ideal for higher-volume workflows.
The Ricoh fi-8170 is designed for high-volume scanning (1,000-7,000 pages daily) and may exceed the needs of a typical small business. Its 70 ppm speed and 100-sheet ADF are ideal for departments or service bureaus, but smaller offices scanning fewer than 1,000 pages daily might find it overkill. For lighter workloads, consider a more compact scanner like the Ricoh fi-8040.
The Ricoh fi-8170 is a document scanner, not a printer, so it does not support printing in color or monochrome. For color printing needs, consider alternatives like the Ricoh MP C307, Ricoh MP C4504, or Ricoh MP C6004.
