Is this the right printer for you?

Who the Oce Colorwave 900 is actually for

Most printer pages just tell you what a printer does. Here's the honest version: when this machine is the right choice, when it's fine, and when you should look at something else. We sell a lot of these for a reason, but the reason is not "every office."

Best fit

Pick this if...

  • Pick this if you produce 5,000+ large color prints per month and your bottleneck is print speed.
  • Pick this if you publish maps, GIS plots, or color CAD where 1,600 dpi detail actually matters.
  • Pick this if you have a real production floor with 60+ square feet plus weight capacity for 882 lbs.
  • Pick this if your operator is dedicated to feeding the machine, not multitasking.
  • Pick this if water-fast prints that can fold instantly are critical to your turnaround promise.
Works fine

You'll be happy if...

  • It's fine if you do 3,000-5,000 large prints monthly and want headroom for peak weeks.
  • It's fine if most of your work is color CAD and you only occasionally print posters or maps.
  • It's fine if your color critical isn't fine-art reproduction; aqueous CMYK is technical-grade, not gallery.
  • It's fine if you can dedicate Adobe PostScript workflows to the controller and don't need third-party RIPs.
Look elsewhere

Skip this if...

  • Skip this if your monthly volume is under 2,000 large prints; the machine sits idle and the cost-per-page math breaks.
  • Skip this if you don't have a print operator on staff; this isn't a self-serve device.
  • Skip this if your shop is in an upstairs office without freight-elevator access.
  • Skip this if you need scanning or copying built in; this is a single-function printer.
  • Skip this if you need duplex large-format; aqueous inkjet on roll media is single-sided.
Full specifications

Every spec, no guessing

The Oce ColorWave 900 is the heavyweight of the ColorWave line, a 42-inch single-pass aqueous inkjet that puts down 1,000 square meters per hour, roughly 430 A0 pages. This is for high-volume CAD and GIS production houses, map publishers, and reprographics floors where the operator's job is feeding paper, not waiting on the print. Resolution is 1,600x1,600 dpi at full quality, much sharper than the CrystalPoint machines, with 1.2-picoliter droplets that hold detail on technical line work and color maps. Six rolls online, 200 meters each, so 1,200 meters of total media before reload. The ink is aqueous CMYK plus a second K, which means prints are water-fast within seconds and you can fold or stack immediately. The single-pass head architecture is the advantage and the gotcha: it's blazing fast, but if a nozzle goes down mid-job, the redundancy isn't as forgiving as a multi-pass machine. The one thing buyers regret is underestimating the floor footprint and the 882-pound weight; you need a real print room, not a corner. Adobe PostScript 3 and PDF native through the controller. Volume range that justifies it: 5,000+ large prints a month minimum.

Supplies & consumables

Toner, yields, and what to actually reorder

The #1 question we get on this printer is "which toner do I buy?" Short answer: you have two cartridge options and a drum. Standard yield TN830 covers roughly 1,200 pages. High yield TN830XL covers roughly 4,500 pages and is the better value for most offices. Pick XL unless you print very little.

The drum unit (DR810) is separate and usually lasts 15,000 to 30,000 pages before it needs replacing. At a typical small office volume, expect to change it once every 2 to 4 years.

If you lease this printer through us, toner and drum are included. You never pay for supplies separately. That's usually the better deal once you add up real costs over 3 years.

FAQ

Oce Colorwave 900, common questions

The questions we get asked most often on this model. If yours isn't here, call (704) 741-0821 and get an answer in about 30 seconds.

The Oce Colorwave 900 does not use toner; it uses high-capacity aqueous ink tanks (CMYKK) designed for high-volume printing. The printer ships with starter ink tanks, and replacement ink is available in 2-liter or 10-liter capacities. For example, the high-yield black ink (part number 1070025276) yields approximately 2,574 pages. When you lease through us with ink included, you never pay for ink separately.
The Oce Colorwave 900 is a high-speed, single-pass aqueous inkjet printer designed for large-format CAD, GIS, and reprographics, with a speed of 1,000 square meters per hour and a focus on technical line work and color maps. In contrast, the Canon Arizona 1240 GT is a flatbed UV-curable inkjet printer built for sign shops and industrial applications, printing directly onto rigid substrates up to 49.6 x 98.8 inches. The Colorwave 900 uses aqueous ink and is optimized for high-volume paper-based outputs, while the Arizona 1240 GT uses UV-curable ink and supports materials like wood, glass, and acrylic. For small offices needing large-format printing, the Colorwave 900 is better suited for high-volume technical prints, whereas the Arizona 1240 GT is ideal for versatile rigid media applications.
The Oce Colorwave 900 is designed for high-volume production environments, such as CAD and GIS production houses, with a minimum recommended volume of 5,000 large prints per month. Its speed (1,000 square meters per hour) and large footprint (882 pounds) make it overkill for most small businesses. If your business requires a more compact or lower-volume solution, consider stepping up to a commercial option better suited for small offices.
Yes, the Oce Colorwave 900 supports full-color printing using aqueous CMYK plus a second black ink. This setup ensures vibrant color output and sharp detail, making it ideal for technical line work, color maps, and high-quality large-format prints.
