Is this the right printer for you?

Who the Oce ColorWave 650 is actually for

Most printer pages just tell you what a printer does. Here's the honest version: when this machine is the right choice, when it's fine, and when you should look at something else. We sell a lot of these for a reason, but the reason is not "every office."

Best fit

Pick this if...

  • Pick this if you run an in-house print room doing 500+ large color prints a month and want to stop outsourcing.
  • Pick this if you need instant-dry output you can stack and roll right off the printer without a drying rack.
  • Pick this if you switch between bond, vellum, polyester film, and Tyvek and don't want to recalibrate every time.
  • Pick this if you have two operators who need to print, copy, and scan concurrently without queue lockups.
  • Pick this if 600 dpi is enough for your work (CAD, site plans, posters, retail signage).
Works fine

You'll be happy if...

  • It's fine if you're doing 200-500 large prints a month and want headroom for growth.
  • It's fine if most of your work is monochrome but you need occasional color without a second machine.
  • It's fine if you only need three or four media types loaded at once instead of all six rolls.
  • It's fine if you can live with a 600 dpi cap because your output is mostly line work, not photography.
Look elsewhere

Skip this if...

  • Skip this if you need photo-grade reproduction; 600x600 dpi shows up on gradients and skin tones.
  • Skip this if you print fewer than 100 large sheets a month; the consumables cost won't pencil out.
  • Skip this if you need duplex large-format output; this is single-sided only.
  • Skip this if your floor can't accommodate a 5-foot-wide footprint plus media clearance.
  • Skip this if you need wireless or full mobile-app workflows; connectivity is workgroup-grade.
Full specifications

Every spec, no guessing

The Oce ColorWave 650 is a 42-inch wide-format color printer for in-house print rooms at architecture, engineering, and signage shops that got tired of outsourcing their color sets. It runs CrystalPoint TonerPearls, a hybrid that melts pellets into a gel that lands dry on the paper, so you can pick up a 36x48 site plan and roll it without smudging. Throughput is 225 A1-size prints per hour in monochrome and around 130 in full color, with six 42-inch rolls online so the operator isn't swapping media all day. Resolution is 600x600 dpi, which is plenty for technical line work and posters but is the one thing buyers regret if they came in expecting fine-art reproduction. Volume range that makes sense: 200 to 2,000 large prints a month. Below that you're not feeding it enough to justify the footprint. The PowerM Plus controller handles concurrent print, copy, and scan jobs, so two operators can pull and queue at the same time. Power draw is reasonable at 360W active, 72W in sleep. Plain bond, recycled, polyester film, and Tyvek all run without re-profiling.

Supplies & consumables

Toner, yields, and what to actually reorder

The #1 question we get on this printer is "which toner do I buy?" Short answer: you have two cartridge options and a drum. Standard yield TN830 covers roughly 1,200 pages. High yield TN830XL covers roughly 4,500 pages and is the better value for most offices. Pick XL unless you print very little.

The drum unit (DR810) is separate and usually lasts 15,000 to 30,000 pages before it needs replacing. At a typical small office volume, expect to change it once every 2 to 4 years.

If you lease this printer through us, toner and drum are included. You never pay for supplies separately. That's usually the better deal once you add up real costs over 3 years.

FAQ

Oce ColorWave 650, common questions

The questions we get asked most often on this model. If yours isn't here, call (704) 741-0821 and get an answer in about 30 seconds.

Yes, the Oce ColorWave 650 ships with a starter toner cartridge. The starter toner yields approximately 2,500–3,000 D-size prints at 5% coverage. Replacement toner uses the Canon/Oce P2 TonerPearls in CMYK, with each 500-gram cartridge designed for high-yield production. When you lease through us with toner included, you never pay for toner separately.
The Oce ColorWave 650 is a wide-format color printer designed for technical prints and posters, using CrystalPoint TonerPearls for dry, smudge-free output on rolls up to 42 inches wide. The Canon Arizona 1240 GT is a flatbed UV-curable inkjet printer for rigid substrates like wood, glass, and acrylic, with a 4x8-foot bed and variable droplet sizes for near-photographic quality. The ColorWave 650 is better for high-volume technical prints, while the Arizona 1240 GT excels in industrial signage and direct-to-substrate printing. For small offices needing versatile large-format output, the ColorWave 650 offers a more compact and cost-effective solution.
The Oce ColorWave 650 is ideal for small businesses producing 200–2,000 large-format prints monthly, such as architectural firms or sign shops. Its 225 A1-size prints per hour in monochrome and 130 in color, along with six 42-inch rolls, ensure efficient workflows. However, if your volume exceeds 2,000 prints or requires finer detail, consider stepping up to a commercial option.
Yes, the Oce ColorWave 650 supports full-color printing using CMYK TonerPearls, making it suitable for technical drawings, posters, and signage. Its 600x600 dpi resolution is ideal for most applications, though fine-art reproduction may require higher resolution.
