Is this the right printer for you?

Who the HP LaserJet Pro 4001dn Printer is actually for

Most printer pages just tell you what a printer does. Here's the honest version: when this machine is the right choice, when it's fine, and when you should look at something else. We sell a lot of these for a reason, but the reason is not "every office."

Best fit

Pick this if...

  • You run a workgroup of up to 10 people on a wired network and want auto duplex standard.
  • You print 750-4,000 pages a month, mostly two-sided — the chassis is sized for exactly this volume.
  • You want HP Wolf Pro security preconfigured for a regulated environment (legal, healthcare, finance).
  • You don't need Wi-Fi — Ethernet-only keeps the device off the wireless network for security policy reasons.
  • You're replacing an aging M404dn or M402dn — same form factor, faster, better security.
Works fine

You'll be happy if...

  • You print up to 6,000 pages a month — the 80,000 max duty handles it, but plan on the W1480X high-yield cartridges and order in pairs.
  • You want a third tray — the D9P29A 550-sheet feeder bolts on for 900 sheets total input.
  • You occasionally need to print from a phone — Apple AirPrint and Mopria work over the wired network, but no Wi-Fi Direct without the dw model.
Look elsewhere

Skip this if...

  • You need wireless — no Wi-Fi, no Bluetooth on this model. Get the 4001dw (2Z601F) instead.
  • You need to scan, copy, or fax — print-only. Look at the LaserJet Pro MFP 4101fdn or 4101fdw.
  • You need color — mono only. Get a Color LaserJet Pro 4201/4301 series.
  • You print over 5,000 pages a month consistently — the 4001 chassis is fine for it but a M507 or M528 has heavier-duty paper paths and lower per-page cost.
  • You want a touchscreen — this is a 2-line LCD; nothing fancy.
Full specifications

Every spec, no guessing

The HP LaserJet Pro 4001dn is the wired auto-duplex mono laser in the 4001 series — what most workgroups of 5-10 people actually want when they're replacing an old HP mono printer. Same engine as the 4001n: 42 ppm letter, 6.1-second first page out, 80,000-page max duty, 4,000-page recommended monthly volume, 350-sheet standard input expandable to 900 with the D9P29A 550-sheet feeder. The dn adds automatic two-sided printing standard, which alone justifies the upgrade if you print contracts, reports, or anything multi-page on a regular basis. Connectivity is Gigabit Ethernet and USB 2.0 — no Wi-Fi (that's the dw). The 2-line backlit LCD is the same minimal interface as the n — fine for a printer that lives on a network, not on a desktop. HP Wolf Pro Security is preconfigured out of the box: PIN/pull authentication, Sure Start BIOS, run-time intrusion detection. Uses HP 148A (~2,900 pages) or 148X high-yield (~9,500 pages) cartridges. The thing buyers regret: ordering only standard 148A cartridges. At 4,000 pages/month you'll burn one a month — the high-yield 148X works out to roughly 30% lower cost per page.

Supplies & consumables

Toner, yields, and what to actually reorder

The #1 question we get on this printer is "which toner do I buy?" Short answer: you have two cartridge options and a drum. Standard yield TN830 covers roughly 1,200 pages. High yield TN830XL covers roughly 4,500 pages and is the better value for most offices. Pick XL unless you print very little.

The drum unit (DR810) is separate and usually lasts 15,000 to 30,000 pages before it needs replacing. At a typical small office volume, expect to change it once every 2 to 4 years.

If you lease this printer through us, toner and drum are included. You never pay for supplies separately. That's usually the better deal once you add up real costs over 3 years.

What customers actually say

The 5-star consensus: "it just works"

Small sample size, high signal. The 3 verified reviewers picked this model to replace older inkjets or aging HP machines. Common threads in the feedback:

  • "Been using this for about 8 months in our small office and it's held up really well. The 4001dn handles our mixed workload without any hiccups, and the automatic duplex printing has actually saved us a lot on paper costs. Network setup was straightforward too."
  • "Solid workhorse printer for a home office. Print quality is sharp and the toner cartridges last a decent amount of time. My only complaint is the paper tray could be bigger since I'm refilling it pretty often."
  • "Replaced an older Canon with this and I'm impressed by the reliability. Runs quietly, prints fast, and the web interface for remote management works as advertised. No major issues in the first year."
