Is this the right printer for you?

Who the HP DesignJet T120 is actually for

Most printer pages just tell you what a printer does. Here's the honest version: when this machine is the right choice, when it's fine, and when you should look at something else. We sell a lot of these for a reason, but the reason is not "every office."

Best fit

Pick this if...

  • You're a small architecture or design firm needing 24-inch CAD output.
  • You print 5-25 plots a week and don't need production speed.
  • You want Wi-Fi and ePrint for printing from phones and tablets.
  • You're sourcing a refurb at sharp pricing with ink cartridges available.
  • You print mostly CAD drawings and review plots.
Works fine

You'll be happy if...

  • It's fine if you only print line work occasionally.
  • It's fine if you accept manual cutting on roll output.
  • It's fine if you mostly print on bond and only occasionally on coated.
  • It's fine if you skip color images and stick to schematics.
Look elsewhere

Skip this if...

  • Skip this if you need current driver and app support — go T210 or T230.
  • Skip this if you need 36-inch or wider output.
  • Skip this if you need PostScript.
  • Skip this if you print 50+ plots a week.
  • Skip this if you want dual rolls and auto-switching.
Full specifications

Every spec, no guessing

The HP DesignJet T120 is a 24-inch entry-level color wide-format inkjet for small architects, designers, and freelancers needing basic CAD and image output. Speed hits 60 ppm B&W line work and roughly 35 seconds for an A1 plot in normal mode. Resolution tops out at 2400 x 1200 dpi optimized using HP's thermal inkjet with separate CMYK cartridges. Connectivity covers Wi-Fi, Ethernet, USB, and HP ePrint for mobile printing. Single roll, no auto-cutter on the base model. The regret on this machine: it's an older T-series unit — the T210 and T230 supersede it with current driver pipelines and HP Smart app support. Refurb T120s are fine for occasional use, but new buyers should look at the current entry-level T-series instead. Cartridge yield runs in the 25-30 A1 prints per cartridge range — modest, so plan for frequent swaps in higher-volume use. Setup walks through HP ePrint configuration during install, and the unit ships with starter ink cartridges for first-day use.

Supplies & consumables

Toner, yields, and what to actually reorder

The #1 question we get on this printer is "which toner do I buy?" Short answer: you have two cartridge options and a drum. Standard yield TN830 covers roughly 1,200 pages. High yield TN830XL covers roughly 4,500 pages and is the better value for most offices. Pick XL unless you print very little.

The drum unit (DR810) is separate and usually lasts 15,000 to 30,000 pages before it needs replacing. At a typical small office volume, expect to change it once every 2 to 4 years.

If you lease this printer through us, toner and drum are included. You never pay for supplies separately. That's usually the better deal once you add up real costs over 3 years.
