Is this the right printer for you?

Who the HP DesignJet T100 is actually for

Most printer pages just tell you what a printer does. Here's the honest version: when this machine is the right choice, when it's fine, and when you should look at something else. We sell a lot of these for a reason, but the reason is not "every office."

Best fit

Pick this if...

  • You're a small architecture firm, freelance engineer, or design student needing 24-inch plots.
  • You print 5-30 plots a week and don't need production speed.
  • You want Wi-Fi and HP Smart app for printing from phones and tablets.
  • You're starting out and want the lowest entry price for a real HP DesignJet.
  • You print mostly CAD drawings, schematics, and review plots.
Works fine

You'll be happy if...

  • It's fine if you mostly print B&W line work and only need color occasionally.
  • It's fine if you don't need an auto-cutter and trim manually.
  • It's fine if you can wait 35-70 seconds per A1 plot.
  • It's fine if single-roll capacity covers your media needs.
Look elsewhere

Skip this if...

  • Skip this if you need 36-inch or wider output — go T530 or T730.
  • Skip this if you print 50+ plots per week — the T200 or T600 series fits better.
  • Skip this if you need dual rolls and auto-switching.
  • Skip this if you need PostScript for design workflows.
  • Skip this if you need built-in scanning.
Full specifications

Every spec, no guessing

The HP DesignJet T100 is a 24-inch entry-level wide-format inkjet for small architects, engineers, and design students who need basic plotter output without the price tag of a production unit. Speed runs A1 prints in roughly 35 seconds (about 70 sec per A1 in best mode). Resolution tops out at 2400 x 1200 dpi optimized using HP's thermal inkjet with separate CMYK cartridges. Connectivity covers Wi-Fi, Ethernet, USB, and HP Smart app for mobile printing. The regret on this machine: it's marked B&W in our specs but the T100 is actually a CMYK plotter with full color output — confirm the configuration on order. It's also single-roll only with no auto-cutter on the base model, which slows down high-volume work. Cartridge yield runs in the 25-30 A1 prints per cartridge range — modest, so plan for cartridge swaps. Setup is straightforward via the HP Smart app on phone or tablet, and the unit ships with a starter set of standard ink cartridges for first-day use.

Supplies & consumables

Toner, yields, and what to actually reorder

The #1 question we get on this printer is "which toner do I buy?" Short answer: you have two cartridge options and a drum. Standard yield TN830 covers roughly 1,200 pages. High yield TN830XL covers roughly 4,500 pages and is the better value for most offices. Pick XL unless you print very little.

The drum unit (DR810) is separate and usually lasts 15,000 to 30,000 pages before it needs replacing. At a typical small office volume, expect to change it once every 2 to 4 years.

If you lease this printer through us, toner and drum are included. You never pay for supplies separately. That's usually the better deal once you add up real costs over 3 years.

FAQ

HP DesignJet T100, common questions

The questions we get asked most often on this model. If yours isn't here, call (704) 741-0821 and get an answer in about 30 seconds.

The HP DesignJet T100 ships with a starter set of standard ink cartridges for first-day use, yielding approximately 25-30 A1 prints per cartridge. Replacement high-yield ink cartridges (HP 711XL series) include an 80-ml black cartridge and 29-ml color cartridges (cyan, magenta, yellow) for lower cost-per-page. When you lease through us with toner included, you never pay for toner separately.
The HP DesignJet T100 is a 24-inch wide-format inkjet plotter designed for small architects and engineers, offering color printing at 2400 x 1200 dpi and a speed of roughly 35 seconds per A1 print. In contrast, the HP Color LaserJet Managed MFP E78625dn is a floor-standing A3 color laser MFP with a 25-ppm print speed, a 110,000-page monthly duty cycle, and advanced security features like HP Wolf Security. The DesignJet T100 is ideal for large-format prints, while the E78625dn is better suited for high-volume office environments with its scanning, copying, and network integration capabilities. For small offices needing both wide-format and high-volume printing, the E78625dn may be a more versatile choice.
The HP DesignJet T100 is well-suited for small businesses in architecture, engineering, or design that require basic wide-format color printing. It offers a resolution of 2400 x 1200 dpi and prints A1-sized documents in about 35 seconds, making it efficient for small-scale projects. However, its single-roll design and lack of an auto-cutter may limit high-volume workflows.
Yes, the HP DesignJet T100 supports full color printing using CMYK ink cartridges, despite some specifications incorrectly labeling it as monochrome. It uses separate HP 711XL ink cartridges for cyan, magenta, yellow, and black to produce high-quality color outputs at up to 2400 x 1200 dpi.
