Is this the right printer for you?

Who the Canon imageRUNNER ADVANCE DX C478iF is actually for

Most printer pages just tell you what a printer does. Here's the honest version: when this machine is the right choice, when it's fine, and when you should look at something else. We sell a lot of these for a reason, but the reason is not "every office."

Best fit

Pick this if...

  • You run a small workgroup of 5-25 people that needs a desktop A4 color MFP — no tabloid required.
  • You print 1,500-5,000 pages a month, color and black mixed.
  • You scan stacks of contracts, invoices, or intake forms regularly — the 100-sheet single-pass DADF runs 100 ipm one-sided / 200 ipm duplex.
  • You already standardize on Canon imageRUNNER and want one more device that drops into uniFLOW Online without retraining.
  • You want Super G3 fax and the full enterprise scan destination set (SMB, FTP, WebDAV, IFAX) standard, not as add-ons.
Works fine

You'll be happy if...

  • You print 5,000-7,000 pages a month — the 50 ppm engine handles it, you'll just go through T04 toner faster.
  • You want a finisher — that's the C478iFZ variant in this same series; the C478iF (this model) is the no-finisher version.
  • You're replacing an aging Canon iR C1225iF or similar A4 desktop MFP — the 10.1-inch touchscreen takes a few days to learn but operators adapt fast.
  • You need extra paper trays — add up to two Cassette Module-AJ1 desktop cassettes or the 1,650-sheet Cassette Feeding Unit-AT1 to reach 2,300 sheets.
Look elsewhere

Skip this if...

  • You print over 8,000 pages a month — step up to the C568iF (60 ppm) or move to the A3 C3830i / C3835i for higher monthly headroom.
  • You need 11x17 tabloid output — this engine maxes out at 8.5 x 14 (Legal). Look at the C3800 or C5800 series for A3.
  • You print under 500 pages a month — this is overbuilt for that. A desktop imageCLASS MFP (MF series) costs less and uses less power.
  • You don't have an authorized Canon dealer relationship — T04 toner and uniFLOW configuration go through contract channels, not retail.
  • You want a finisher added later — the C478iF doesn't take a field-installed finisher; you have to order the C478iFZ at purchase time.
Full specifications

Every spec, no guessing

The Canon imageRUNNER ADVANCE DX C478iF is a desktop A4 color laser multifunction built for small workgroups (5-25 users) that need a real iR-ADV office MFP without the A3 floor unit footprint. It prints and copies up to 50 ppm in both black and color (39 ppm Legal), with a 5.1-second first copy out (black) / 5.8 seconds (color), and scans at 200 ipm duplex via the 100-sheet single-pass DADF. Standard paper capacity is 650 sheets across the 550-sheet cassette and 100-sheet multipurpose tray; expandable to 2,300 sheets with up to two optional desktop cassettes (Cassette Module-AJ1) or the 1,650-sheet Cassette Feeding Unit-AT1. The 10.1-inch color touchscreen runs the same iR-ADV DX workflow as the larger C3800 and C5800 series — same uniFLOW Online dashboard, same Hot Folders, same scan-to-everything (SMB v3.0, FTP, WebDAV, email, IFAX, Office Open XML). Connectivity is Gigabit Ethernet plus Wi-Fi standard, with NFC and Bluetooth Low Energy as options. Super G3 fax is built in. Security is the standard iR-ADV DX stack: McAfee Embedded Control, FIPS 140-2 HDD encryption, TLS 1.0/1.1/1.2/1.3, IEEE 802.1X, SIEM integration. The thing buyers regret: ordering the iF and then wishing they'd gotten the iFZ (with inner finisher). The finisher cannot be added after purchase — decide at the order. Toner is the T04 cartridge (BK 33,000 / CMY 27,500 pages).

Supplies & consumables

Toner, yields, and what to actually reorder

The #1 question we get on this printer is "which toner do I buy?" Short answer: you have two cartridge options and a drum. Standard yield TN830 covers roughly 1,200 pages. High yield TN830XL covers roughly 4,500 pages and is the better value for most offices. Pick XL unless you print very little.

The drum unit (DR810) is separate and usually lasts 15,000 to 30,000 pages before it needs replacing. At a typical small office volume, expect to change it once every 2 to 4 years.

If you lease this printer through us, toner and drum are included. You never pay for supplies separately. That's usually the better deal once you add up real costs over 3 years.

What customers actually say

The 5-star consensus: "it just works"

Small sample size, high signal. The 7 verified reviewers picked this model to replace older inkjets or aging Canon machines. Common threads in the feedback:

  • "We use this for our small accounting firm and it handles our scan-to-email workflow really well. The automatic document feeder is fast and the color output quality is sharp for client reports."
  • "Good machine overall for a busy office. The finishing options are helpful and it prints both sides automatically without much fussing. My only complaint is the initial setup took longer than I'd have liked."
  • "This imageRUNNER handles our high-volume printing needs at the print shop. Reliability has been solid for the past two years with minimal downtime, and the fax functionality works as expected."
  • "We got this for our office about 18 months ago and it handles our print volume without breaking a sweat. The finisher options are solid and the network scanning to email works reliably. Color quality is consistent enough for our client-facing materials."
  • "Good workhorse machine for a small legal office. The DX variant gives us the flexibility we need for different paper sizes and the duplex speeds up our workflow. Interface takes some getting used to but once you know your way around it's fine."
  • "Been running this unit for two years straight with minimal downtime. The toner costs are reasonable compared to what we were using before, and the finishing options mean we do less prep work on bigger jobs."
  • "Solid machine for production work but it's definitely not small. If you have the space and the volume to justify it, the output quality and speed are worth it. Setup with our existing system was straightforward."
