Is this the right printer for you?

Who the Canon imageRUNNER ADVANCE 400iF is actually for

Most printer pages just tell you what a printer does. Here's the honest version: when this machine is the right choice, when it's fine, and when you should look at something else. We sell a lot of these for a reason, but the reason is not "every office."

Best fit

Pick this if...

  • You run a small office or workgroup of 3-15 people printing 1,500-6,000 pages a month and want a desktop-class A4 MFP with fax.
  • You need print, copy, scan, and fax in one box without paying for A3 (11x17) you don't use.
  • You want the Canon ADVANCE UI (iWMC compatible, MEAP apps, uniFLOW) on a small footprint — under 25 inches in any dimension, fits on a credenza.
  • You print a lot of mobile jobs — AirPrint, Mopria, and Google Cloud Print are standard.
Works fine

You'll be happy if...

  • You print 6,000-10,000 pages a month — the 80,000-page max duty cycle handles it, but you'll burn through the 15,200-impression toner cartridge faster than ideal.
  • You need wireless and didn't budget for it — the NB-W2 adapter is around $200.
  • You scan to USB occasionally — works, just not as fast as scan-to-network.
Look elsewhere

Skip this if...

  • You need 11x17 (A3) printing — this is letter/legal only, period. Look at the imageRUNNER ADVANCE 4225 or 4525i.
  • You print over 10,000 pages a month — wrong machine. Get a 4525i or step up to color if you need it.
  • You need single-pass duplex scanning at 200+ ipm — the 400iF's DADF tops out around 50-70 ipm.
  • You need built-in Wi-Fi — wireless is an optional adapter on this generation.
  • You need color — this is mono only.
Full specifications

Every spec, no guessing

The Canon imageRUNNER ADVANCE 400iF is a 42-ppm desktop-class A4 mono multifunction built for small offices and workgroups of 3-15 people running 1,500-6,000 pages a month. It's the smallest unit in the ADVANCE family — 24.9 x 22.1 x 22.4 inches, 107 lb, fits on a credenza, runs on a normal 120V/10.5A office circuit. Print resolution is 1200 x 1200 dpi, first copy out in 5 seconds, monthly duty cycle 80,000 pages. Standard paper capacity is 600 sheets (a single 550-sheet drawer plus 50-sheet bypass), expandable with an additional 550-sheet cassette. The 7-inch WVGA color touchscreen runs the same ADVANCE UI as the bigger 4500i units, including MEAP apps, uniFLOW integration, and standard scan-to-email, scan-to-SMB/FTP, scan-to-USB, and fax. Standard connectivity is Gigabit Ethernet plus USB 2.0; AirPrint, Mopria, and Google Cloud Print are standard; Wi-Fi is optional via the NB-W2 adapter. The thing buyers regret: paying for fax they never plug in, or buying it expecting 11x17 — this is letter/legal only. If you need A3 or higher volume, the 4225 or 4525i is the right call.

Supplies & consumables

Toner, yields, and what to actually reorder

The #1 question we get on this printer is "which toner do I buy?" Short answer: you have two cartridge options and a drum. Standard yield TN830 covers roughly 1,200 pages. High yield TN830XL covers roughly 4,500 pages and is the better value for most offices. Pick XL unless you print very little.

The drum unit (DR810) is separate and usually lasts 15,000 to 30,000 pages before it needs replacing. At a typical small office volume, expect to change it once every 2 to 4 years.

If you lease this printer through us, toner and drum are included. You never pay for supplies separately. That's usually the better deal once you add up real costs over 3 years.
