Is this the right printer for you?

Who the Canon imageRUNNER 5065 is actually for

Most printer pages just tell you what a printer does. Here's the honest version: when this machine is the right choice, when it's fine, and when you should look at something else. We sell a lot of these for a reason, but the reason is not "every office."

Best fit

Pick this if...

  • You run an in-plant or production B&W print shop printing 75,000-200,000 pages a month.
  • You want 65 ppm letter B&W with true 1200 x 1200 dpi and 250K pages/month duty cycle.
  • You're replacing a like-for-like 5065 and want supply continuity (GPR-21 / C-EXV13 family).
  • You need MEAP, full finishing options, and a 10.4-inch touchscreen for walk-up workflows.
  • You have 208V power, adequate floor space, and trained operators.
Works fine

You'll be happy if...

  • You print 40,000-75,000 pages a month — within duty cycle, longer lease amortization.
  • You need full finishing — staple-stacker, booklet finisher, hole-punch all available.
  • You need scan-to-network — works for SMB/FTP/email; cloud needs MEAP apps.
Look elsewhere

Skip this if...

  • You print under 30,000 pages a month — get an iR-ADV 4500/4700 series instead.
  • You need color. Mono only.
  • You need TLS 1.2 / SMBv3 / AirPrint native — not on this platform.
  • You don't have the right power, floor space, or operators — this is a production unit, not a desk MFP.
  • You need current security patches from Canon — the 5065 is end-of-life for security updates.
Full specifications

Every spec, no guessing

The Canon imageRUNNER 5065 is a 65 ppm production-class B&W MFP — same chassis as the 5050/5055, but with a faster engine for higher-volume in-plant and reprographics work. Max duty cycle is 250,000 pages a month, first copy out is 3.5 seconds, and print resolution is true 1200 x 1200 dpi. Standard paper capacity is 3,650 sheets across dual 550-sheet and dual 1,500-sheet drawers plus 50-sheet bypass — expandable with optional decks. The 10.4-inch color touchscreen, MEAP application platform, standard auto duplex, 100-sheet DADF, and Gigabit Ethernet are all in the box. Toner is the GPR-21 / C-EXV13 family. The chassis is 47 x 25-3/8 x 29-1/4 inches and weighs around 470 lb. This is the right machine for an in-plant or production B&W print shop printing 75,000-200,000 pages a month that needs 65 ppm throughput with full finishing options. The thing buyers regret: assuming this platform supports modern security or cloud workflows. It doesn't — late 2000s controller stack, no TLS 1.2, no SMBv3, no native AirPrint. Most buyers today are existing fleet operators replacing a sister unit. For modern workflows, look at the iR-ADV DX 6700 / 8700 series instead.

Supplies & consumables

Toner, yields, and what to actually reorder

The #1 question we get on this printer is "which toner do I buy?" Short answer: you have two cartridge options and a drum. Standard yield TN830 covers roughly 1,200 pages. High yield TN830XL covers roughly 4,500 pages and is the better value for most offices. Pick XL unless you print very little.

The drum unit (DR810) is separate and usually lasts 15,000 to 30,000 pages before it needs replacing. At a typical small office volume, expect to change it once every 2 to 4 years.

If you lease this printer through us, toner and drum are included. You never pay for supplies separately. That's usually the better deal once you add up real costs over 3 years.

In contrast, the Canon imageRUNNER ADVANCE DX 4825i is a workgroup MFP with a speed of 25 ppm, a monthly duty cycle suited for 3,000 to 15,000 pages, and a 10.1-inch color touchscreen. The DX 4825i includes modern features like Wi-Fi, a 256 GB SSD, and TPM 2.0, making it more suitable for small to medium offices with lower volume needs. For small offices, the DX 4825i offers better modern workflow integration and security features.
The Canon imageRUNNER 5065 is designed for high-volume printing, with a speed of 65 ppm and a monthly duty cycle of 250,000 pages. While it offers robust features like a 10.4-inch color touchscreen and high paper capacity, it may be overkill for a typical small business. Its lack of modern security features and cloud workflows could also be a limitation. For a small business, consider stepping up to a more modern commercial option that better fits your needs.
