Is this the right printer for you?

Who the Canon imagerunner 2016 is actually for

Most printer pages just tell you what a printer does. Here's the honest version: when this machine is the right choice, when it's fine, and when you should look at something else. We sell a lot of these for a reason, but the reason is not "every office."

Best fit

Pick this if...

  • You run a 2-8 person office that needs occasional 11x17 copy and print, mostly letter/legal.
  • You print under 2,000 pages a month and want a no-frills A3 copier without managed print contracts.
  • You're replacing a like-for-like iR 2016 and want supply continuity (GPR-22 / NPG-32 toner).
  • You want a desktop-footprint A3 unit (22.9 x 24.5 inches base, 87 lb) — fits on a sturdy table.
  • You need a simple copier-first workflow: walk up, drop original, hit start. No touchscreen learning curve.
Works fine

You'll be happy if...

  • You print 2,000-4,000 pages a month — within max duty cycle but you'll feel the 16 ppm speed during long jobs.
  • You need print/scan from PCs — works once you add the optional network kit, but it's not standard.
  • You occasionally need duplex — works with the optional duplex unit, plan for the add-on cost.
Look elsewhere

Skip this if...

  • You need scan-to-email or scan-to-cloud out of the box — base unit is copier-only; network/scan kits are extra.
  • You print over 5,000 pages a month — at 16 ppm and 50K duty cycle you're abusing the machine. Move up to a 2530 or 2545.
  • You need color. This is mono only.
  • You need modern security or mobile printing — the iR 2016 predates AirPrint, Mopria, and TLS 1.2.
  • You need a fast first-copy-out time — 7.9 seconds is slow by 2026 standards for a small-office MFP.
Full specifications

Every spec, no guessing

The Canon imageRUNNER 2016 is a small-office A3 black-and-white copier that prints 16 pages per minute on letter, with a single 250-sheet drawer plus 100-sheet bypass and a 50,000 pages/month max duty cycle. The base machine is a copier first — print, scan, and network features are optional kits, which is the source of most buyer surprise. Footprint is small enough to live on a sturdy table (22.9 x 24.5 x 25 inches, 87 lb) and toner is the GPR-22 / NPG-32 family, which is still readily stocked by aftermarket suppliers. First copy out is 7.9 seconds and resolution is 600 x 600 dpi. The control panel is a 5-line monochrome LCD — there is no touchscreen, no scan-to-email out of the box, and no mobile printing. This is the machine you buy when a small office (2-8 people, under 2,000 pages/month) needs occasional 11x17 copy and basic letter printing, and you specifically don't want to be sold features you won't use. If you need scan-to-network or any of the modern workflow features, either spec the optional kits up front or look at the iR 2525/2530 instead.

Supplies & consumables

Toner, yields, and what to actually reorder

The #1 question we get on this printer is "which toner do I buy?" Short answer: you have two cartridge options and a drum. Standard yield TN830 covers roughly 1,200 pages. High yield TN830XL covers roughly 4,500 pages and is the better value for most offices. Pick XL unless you print very little.

The drum unit (DR810) is separate and usually lasts 15,000 to 30,000 pages before it needs replacing. At a typical small office volume, expect to change it once every 2 to 4 years.

If you lease this printer through us, toner and drum are included. You never pay for supplies separately. That's usually the better deal once you add up real costs over 3 years.

FAQ

Canon imagerunner 2016, common questions

The questions we get asked most often on this model. If yours isn't here, call (704) 741-0821 and get an answer in about 30 seconds.

Yes, the Canon imageRUNNER 2016 ships with a starter toner cartridge. The starter toner has a yield of approximately 8,300 pages at 6% coverage. The replacement toner model is the Canon GPR-18 (0384B003AA), which also yields 8,300 pages. When you lease through us with toner included, you never pay for toner separately.
The Canon imageRUNNER 2016 is a basic monochrome copier designed for small offices, printing at 16 ppm with a 50,000-page monthly duty cycle and minimal features. In contrast, the Canon imageRUNNER ADVANCE DX 4825i is a workgroup multifunction printer with 25 ppm, a 10.1" color touchscreen, standard Wi-Fi, and advanced scanning capabilities (up to 270 ipm with optional DADF). The 4825i also includes a 256 GB SSD and supports higher monthly volumes (3,000–15,000 pages). For small offices needing only basic copying, the 2016 is sufficient, but the 4825i is better for growing teams requiring scanning, networking, and faster output.
The Canon imageRUNNER 2016 is suitable for very small businesses (2–8 people) with low print volumes (under 2,000 pages/month) and basic needs like occasional 11x17 copying. However, its lack of standard networking, scan-to-email, and slow 16 ppm speed may limit productivity. For businesses expecting growth or needing modern features, consider upgrading to a commercial option like the Canon imageRUNNER ADVANCE DX series.
No, the Canon imageRUNNER 2016 is a monochrome-only printer. For color printing, consider alternatives like the Canon imageRUNNER ADVANCE C3525i, C3530i, or C5535i.
