Is this the right printer for you?

Who the Canon imagePROGRAF TM-250 is actually for

Most printer pages just tell you what a printer does. Here's the honest version: when this machine is the right choice, when it's fine, and when you should look at something else. We sell a lot of these for a reason, but the reason is not "every office."

Best fit

Pick this if...

  • You're a small AEC firm or design studio printing 100-500 D-size CAD drawings or posters a month.
  • You want larger-capacity ink than the TM-240 — the TM-250 takes 130 ml or 300 ml tanks (vs 55 ml on TM-240), bringing per-page cost down significantly.
  • You print 174 D-size prints per hour at 2.9 ppm — fast enough for a small print room serving multiple architects.
  • You want a flat-body, full-frontal design that fits against a wall and is operated from the front — no rear access required.
  • You're upgrading from a TM-240 or older iPF-series 24" plotter and need the speed and lower ink cost.
Works fine

You'll be happy if...

  • You print 30-100 jobs a month — the TM-250 handles low volume but is overbuilt at that level. The TM-240 may be a better fit if you don't need the speed or larger tanks.
  • You want wireless — Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n is standard.
  • You also do occasional color renderings or signage — the 5-color LUCIA TD pigment ink handles them, just don't expect photo-grade output.
  • You're consolidating from an HP DesignJet T630 or T1700 — operators retrain on Canon's UI in days; ICC profiles need redoing.
Look elsewhere

Skip this if...

  • You print more than 1,000 jobs a month — even with 300 ml tanks, you'll move through ink fast. Step up to TM-340 or TM-350 (36") for higher capacity and throughput.
  • You need 36" or wider output — this is 24" max.
  • You need photo-quality fine art output — this is a CAD/poster pigment printer. PRO-2600/4600 is the photo-grade option.
  • You need to scan or copy in-house — get the TM-250 MFP Lm24 (mono image MFP) or MFP L24ei variants instead.
  • You don't have the floor space — 38.5" wide by 34.2" deep by 41.7" tall with stand. Plan for front clearance for paper output.
Full specifications

Every spec, no guessing

The Canon imagePROGRAF TM-250 is a 24-inch CAD and poster printer for small AEC firms, schools, and reprographic shops printing 100-500 D-size jobs a month. It uses a 5-color LUCIA TD pigment ink system (matte black, photo black, cyan, magenta, yellow) at 2400 x 1200 dpi via the same flat-body, full-frontal chassis as the TM-240 — but with bigger ink tanks (130 ml or 300 ml vs the TM-240's 55/80 ml maximums), faster print speed (2.9 ppm letter, 174 D-prints/hr), and a 20-second A1 first-out time. The 4.3" adjustable touchscreen tilts for walk-up jobs and shows ink levels, sub-tank levels, and media detection on the home screen. Roll feed handles 8-24" wide media (max 5.9" outer diameter), cut sheets 8-24", max thickness 0.8 mm. Connectivity is USB 2.0, Gigabit Ethernet, and Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n. Cartridges are PFI-120/121 (130 ml) or PFI-320/321 (300 ml). EPEAT Gold registered. Power consumption is 62 W max. Footprint with stand is 38.5" wide by 34.2" deep by 41.7" tall, 118 lb operating. Best for offices doing 100-500 jobs a month who outgrew an entry-level plotter but don't need 36" width yet.

Supplies & consumables

Toner, yields, and what to actually reorder

The #1 question we get on this printer is "which toner do I buy?" Short answer: you have two cartridge options and a drum. Standard yield TN830 covers roughly 1,200 pages. High yield TN830XL covers roughly 4,500 pages and is the better value for most offices. Pick XL unless you print very little.

The drum unit (DR810) is separate and usually lasts 15,000 to 30,000 pages before it needs replacing. At a typical small office volume, expect to change it once every 2 to 4 years.

If you lease this printer through us, toner and drum are included. You never pay for supplies separately. That's usually the better deal once you add up real costs over 3 years.

What customers actually say

The 5-star consensus: "it just works"

Small sample size, high signal. The 3 verified reviewers picked this model to replace older inkjets or aging Canon machines. Common threads in the feedback:

  • "Been using this for my design studio for about 8 months now. The print quality on technical drawings is sharp and the 24-inch width handles most of our jobs without needing the larger format machines. Setup was straightforward and it hasn't given us any real issues."
  • "Good printer for the price if you're doing CAD plots or light production work. The speed is decent but sometimes the driver acts up on our network. Overall does what we need it to do, just not without the occasional headache."
  • "Needed something compact for a small office that could handle blueprints and large format documents. This fits the space perfectly and the print output looks professional. Ink costs are reasonable compared to what I was paying before."
