Is this the right printer for you?

Who the Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-2000 is actually for

Most printer pages just tell you what a printer does. Here's the honest version: when this machine is the right choice, when it's fine, and when you should look at something else. We sell a lot of these for a reason, but the reason is not "every office."

Best fit

Pick this if...

  • You run a fine art photo studio, photo lab, or pro photographer producing archival prints up to 24 in. wide.
  • You print color-critical work where 12-color LUCIA PRO + Chroma Optimizer matters (Photo Cyan, Photo Magenta, Gray, Photo Gray, Red, Blue beyond standard CMYK).
  • You need archival-grade output for gallery prints, photo books, and limited editions.
  • You print 100-500 prints a month at 13-24 in. wide and standardize on 330 ml or 700 ml ink tanks.
  • You want a built-in color densitometer for repeatable, calibrated color across long print runs.
Works fine

You'll be happy if...

  • You print 500-1,000 prints a month — works fine, you'll be running it hard. Plan for the head warranty cycle.
  • You print signage and POP alongside fine art — the PRO-2000 will do it but it's overkill for plain signage. The TX-2100 is the signage tool.
  • You're a wedding photographer doing albums and gallery wraps — the PRO-2000 is the right call but check the PRO-2100 (newer revision, same gamut, refreshed mechanism).
  • You're consolidating a desktop photo printer plus an outsourced lab into one in-house workflow.
Look elsewhere

Skip this if...

  • You print signage, posters, retail POP — the GP-200 (with FP) or TX-2100 is the right tool for less money.
  • You need wider than 24 in. — get the PRO-4000 (44 in.), PRO-4100 (44 in. refresh), or PRO-6000 (60 in.).
  • You print fewer than 30 prints a month — head clogging and ink shelf life become real concerns; the 12-color set has high standby maintenance.
  • The PRO-2100 is in market — the PRO-2100 supersedes the PRO-2000 with refreshed firmware, mechanism, and standard Wi-Fi. Buy the 2100 if both are options.
  • You don't have ICC-profiled monitors and a color-managed workflow — you're paying for color depth you can't reproduce or judge.
Full specifications

Every spec, no guessing

The Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-2000 is a 24-inch professional photographic large-format printer built for fine art photo studios, pro photographers, and photo labs producing archival, gallery-grade output. It uses Canon's 12-color LUCIA PRO pigmented ink set with Chroma Optimizer — Photo Black, Matte Black, Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Photo Cyan, Photo Magenta, Gray, Photo Gray, Red, Blue, and a clear Chroma Optimizer that adds gloss/matte uniformity and scratch resistance. Maximum resolution is 2400 x 1200 dpi delivered through a 1.28-in.-wide 12-channel print head. Standard memory is 3 GB. The printer measures 43.7 x 30.2 x 46 in., weighs ~223 lb, and supports cut sheet, roll paper, and glossy photo paper. Connectivity includes Gigabit Ethernet, USB, and Wi-Fi. Ink tanks are PFI-1100 (160 ml), PFI-1300 (330 ml), or PFI-1700 (700 ml). We sell the PRO-2000 for archival photo printing, gallery prints, photo books, fine art reproduction, and limited-edition work where LUCIA PRO color depth and Chroma Optimizer matter. The most common buyer regret: not waiting for or stepping up to the PRO-2100, which supersedes this model with refreshed mechanism, firmware, and standard Wi-Fi. If both are available, buy the 2100.

Supplies & consumables

Toner, yields, and what to actually reorder

The #1 question we get on this printer is "which toner do I buy?" Short answer: you have two cartridge options and a drum. Standard yield TN830 covers roughly 1,200 pages. High yield TN830XL covers roughly 4,500 pages and is the better value for most offices. Pick XL unless you print very little.

The drum unit (DR810) is separate and usually lasts 15,000 to 30,000 pages before it needs replacing. At a typical small office volume, expect to change it once every 2 to 4 years.

If you lease this printer through us, toner and drum are included. You never pay for supplies separately. That's usually the better deal once you add up real costs over 3 years.

What customers actually say

The 5-star consensus: "it just works"

Small sample size, high signal. The 6 verified reviewers picked this model to replace older inkjets or aging Canon machines. Common threads in the feedback:

  • "Needed a wide-format printer for architectural drawings and this Canon handles the 17x22 sheets without any issues. Setup took a bit longer than expected but the color accuracy is solid and I haven't had any paper jams yet after three months of regular use."
  • "Good printer overall for my small design business, though the ink cartridges are pricey and run out faster than I'd like on high-volume jobs. Print quality is consistent and the ethernet connection keeps things running smoothly in my office."
  • "Switched from my old HP and this thing is a beast for photo printing. The 12-color ink system produces way better results than my previous setup, and maintenance is straightforward enough if you follow the manual."
  • "Been using this for my photography printing business for about two years now. The color accuracy is solid and the 17-inch width lets me handle most of my client orders without needing a bigger machine. Paper handling could be smoother but overall it's held up well."
  • "Got it for my design freelance work and it does what I need, though the learning curve on color management took longer than I expected. Print quality is really good once you dial in your settings properly."
  • "Running a small architecture firm and needed something reliable for large format prints. This Canon handles our technical drawings and client presentations without issues. Ink costs are steep but the investment pays off in client satisfaction."
