Is this the right printer for you?

Who the Canon imagePRESS V900 is actually for

Most printer pages just tell you what a printer does. Here's the honest version: when this machine is the right choice, when it's fine, and when you should look at something else. We sell a lot of these for a reason, but the reason is not "every office."

Best fit

Pick this if...

  • You're a commercial printer, trade shop, or in-plant running 60,000-300,000 click-charged color pages a month on the V900.
  • You print on stocks up to 130 lb. Cover (350 gsm) and need automatic duplex on the heaviest sheets, including 30-inch banners.
  • You produce 13x19 short-run work — comps, proofs, packaging, brochures — at 90 ppm Letter, 45 ipm 11x17, 40 ipm 13x19, on V toner with 2400 dpi resolution.
  • You want V-series controller flexibility — PRISMAsync, imagePRESS Server N500 (Fiery), imagePRESS Server P400 (Fiery), or imagePRESS Printer Board.
  • You're standardizing on the V-series chassis and want the top of the V700/V800/V900 family for one cell.
Works fine

You'll be happy if...

  • You print 30,000-60,000 pages a month — handles it but you're amortizing a 90-ppm V-series engine over a longer lease; the V800 may fit better.
  • You need scan/copy — the optional Duplex Color Image Reader runs 270 ipm scan, but the V900 is a print engine first.
  • You're stepping up from a C910 — same 90 ppm class but V toner gamut and registration are noticeably tighter; expect 2-3 weeks profile rebuilds.
  • You want a Fiery DFE — N500 or P400 bolt on; PRISMAsync is the default.
Look elsewhere

Skip this if...

  • You print under 25,000 pages a month — get an imagePRESS Lite C170 or imageRUNNER ADVANCE instead.
  • You need over 100 ppm — step up to the V1000 (100 ppm) or V1350 (135 ppm).
  • You need a small footprint — V-series engines run with a multi-module feeder/finisher train; plan 20-30 linear feet of shop floor.
  • You don't have a PRISMAsync- or Fiery-trained operator — this is click-billed with required operator certification.
  • You need a 1,200 dpi engine for legacy color compatibility — V900 only outputs 2400 dpi.
Full specifications

Every spec, no guessing

The Canon imagePRESS V900 is the top of the V700/V800/V900 family — 90 ppm color and BW Letter (45 ipm 11x17, 42 ipm 12x18, 40 ipm 13x19, 23 ipm 13x30), 2400 x 2400 dpi resolution, and a 1,650-sheet standard / 10,400-sheet maximum paper capacity. Paper-weight envelope is 14 lb. Bond to 110 lb. Cover (52-300 gsm) standard, expanding to 14 lb. Bond to 130 lb. Cover (52-350 gsm) with optional input decks. Automatic duplex on stocks up to 350 gsm and on banners up to 30 inches (simplex up to 1.3 m / 51.2 inches). Same chassis as the V700 and V800 — same accessories, same finisher train, same controller options. Driven by your choice of four controllers: PRISMAsync (standard, with cross-press scheduling), imagePRESS Server N500 or P400 (Fiery), or the entry imagePRESS Printer Board. Optional Duplex Color Image Reader scans single-pass duplex at 270 ipm. Inline finishing includes High-Capacity Stacker, Saddle/Booklet Finisher (25-sheet booklets), Perfect Binder, Multi Function Professional Puncher with seven die patterns. The thing buyers regret: assuming the V900 and the older C910 are interchangeable. They're not — the V900 has a wider paper-weight envelope, the 270 ipm single-pass scanner option, current-generation V toner, and a current-generation controller lineup. If you're replacing a C910, the V900 is the modern equivalent.

Supplies & consumables

Toner, yields, and what to actually reorder

The #1 question we get on this printer is "which toner do I buy?" Short answer: you have two cartridge options and a drum. Standard yield TN830 covers roughly 1,200 pages. High yield TN830XL covers roughly 4,500 pages and is the better value for most offices. Pick XL unless you print very little.

The drum unit (DR810) is separate and usually lasts 15,000 to 30,000 pages before it needs replacing. At a typical small office volume, expect to change it once every 2 to 4 years.

If you lease this printer through us, toner and drum are included. You never pay for supplies separately. That's usually the better deal once you add up real costs over 3 years.
