Is this the right printer for you?

Who the Canon imagePRESS V800 is actually for

Most printer pages just tell you what a printer does. Here's the honest version: when this machine is the right choice, when it's fine, and when you should look at something else. We sell a lot of these for a reason, but the reason is not "every office."

Best fit

Pick this if...

  • You're a commercial printer or in-plant running 40,000-200,000 click-charged color pages a month on the V800.
  • You print on stocks up to 130 lb. Cover (350 gsm) with the optional input decks and need automatic duplex on heavy covers.
  • You produce 13x19 short-run work and need 2400 dpi V toner output at 81 ppm Letter, 40 ipm 11x17, 38 ipm 13x19.
  • You want V-series controller flexibility — PRISMAsync, imagePRESS Server N500 (Fiery), imagePRESS Server P400 (Fiery), or imagePRESS Printer Board.
  • You want long-sheet capability up to 13x30 inches with optional accessories.
Works fine

You'll be happy if...

  • You print 20,000-40,000 pages a month — handles it but you're amortizing the V800 over a longer lease; the V700 may fit better.
  • You need scan/copy — the optional Duplex Color Image Reader runs 270 ipm scan, but the V800 was built as a print engine first.
  • You're stepping up from a C810 — similar 80 ppm class but with V toner and a current-generation controller stack; expect 2-3 weeks profile work.
  • You can host the V-series feeder/finisher train footprint and a PRISMAsync- or Fiery-trained operator.
Look elsewhere

Skip this if...

  • You print under 15,000 pages a month — get an imagePRESS Lite C170 or imageRUNNER ADVANCE instead.
  • You need 90+ ppm Letter — get the V900 on the same chassis.
  • You need a small footprint — V-series engines run with a multi-module feeder/finisher train; plan 20-30 linear feet of shop floor.
  • You don't have a PRISMAsync- or Fiery-trained operator — this is click-billed with required operator certification.
  • You need a 1,200 dpi engine for legacy color compatibility — V800 only outputs 2400 dpi.
Full specifications

Every spec, no guessing

The Canon imagePRESS V800 is the middle member of the V700/V800/V900 family — 81 ppm color and BW Letter (40 ipm 11x17, 40 ipm 12x18, 38 ipm 13x19, 22 ipm 13x30), 2400 x 2400 dpi resolution, and a 1,650-sheet standard / 10,400-sheet maximum paper capacity. Paper-weight envelope is 14 lb. Bond to 110 lb. Cover (52-300 gsm) standard, expanding to 14 lb. Bond to 130 lb. Cover (52-350 gsm) with optional input decks. Automatic duplex on stocks up to 350 gsm. Same chassis as the V700 and V900 — buy at 81 ppm and you can step the same machine up to 90 ppm (V900) or down to 71 ppm (V700) without redesigning the floor. Driven by your choice of four controllers: PRISMAsync (standard, with cross-press scheduling), imagePRESS Server N500 or P400 (Fiery), or the entry-level imagePRESS Printer Board. Optional Duplex Color Image Reader scans single-pass duplex at 270 ipm. Inline finishing includes High-Capacity Stacker, Saddle/Booklet Finisher, Perfect Binder, Multi Function Professional Puncher. The thing buyers regret: skipping straight to the V900 to save money. The V900 is only 9 ppm faster on Letter and adds incremental cost; if your AMPV is below 150,000, the V800 amortizes better.

Supplies & consumables

Toner, yields, and what to actually reorder

The #1 question we get on this printer is "which toner do I buy?" Short answer: you have two cartridge options and a drum. Standard yield TN830 covers roughly 1,200 pages. High yield TN830XL covers roughly 4,500 pages and is the better value for most offices. Pick XL unless you print very little.

The drum unit (DR810) is separate and usually lasts 15,000 to 30,000 pages before it needs replacing. At a typical small office volume, expect to change it once every 2 to 4 years.

If you lease this printer through us, toner and drum are included. You never pay for supplies separately. That's usually the better deal once you add up real costs over 3 years.
